Walking is a continuous event of falling from one limb to the other in order to advance the body forward. Any beginning point in this gait cycle, therefore, is artificial. This analysis system begins during swing with the conspicuous event of lifting the limb from the floor in order to make phase differentiation easier. A generic terminology has been selected to describe the phases of gait so that pathological vairants will fit as well as normal events. (For example, initial contact is used rather than heel strike to indicate the beginning of a stance.) Included in this syllabus are those motions and muscle activities critical to the major functions of gait, propulsion of the body forward and single limb stability. The primary function of each motion and muscle action is summarized. This information must be understood prior to analysis of pathological gait.
