Editorial Review: When counseling breastfeeding families who ask How Weaning Happens, author Diane Bengson says, "Gradually, with love." She answers the many questions she's seen hundreds of families bring up through her years as a La Leche League Leader and wrapped her own as well as their personal experiences into her book How Weaning Happens. She covers social and cultural differences among the breastfeeding families, pressures to wean, natural weaning and various other reasons to wean. She also writes about the physical and emotional changes of mother and child in a nursing relationship. Weaning is the first complete book on the topic from LLLI, though the organization has a number of shorter publications on the subject.

Rating: - Sound, factual advice and information
I read all the negative reviews of the book before reading so I was hyper-aware of any condescension or propaganda. I found none. How Weaning Happens explains, surprisingly, how weaning happens! Covering all the bases, one learns about the societal influence, anecdotal experiences, emotional impact, physiological impact, and the anthropological history of breastfeeding and weaning. The book offers encouragement to continue nursing but NEVER suggests a mother should feel badly about a decision ... Read More
Rating: - Book on Natural Weaning
I was looking for a book to help me with gentle suggestions for weaning. This book suggested natural weaning, where you wait until the child weans himself.
Rating: - more about EBF than weaning
Although this book is supposed to be about weaning it is more geared to extended breast feeding. It is more based on child led weaning which correlates to the La Leche League principles. If you are looking for suggestions to wean cold turkey; this is not the book for you. This is more of an attachment parenting approach than anything. I would recommend this book but it takes a reader who has that mindset. There are many stories and quotes from mothers who have has the experience. It is wasy to read ... Read More
Rating: - No help for for mother-led weaning
A La Leche League leader advised me to read this book in response to my request for advice. Everyone else I knew who had been through the weaning process had seen their children gradually lose interest. This was NOT the path my son was taking. Nursing seemed to be a crucial form of security, comfort and love for him. He was two and my husband and I were very uncomfortable with continuing to nurse, especially in public. Reading this book was very demoralizing. The author goes to great lengths to ... Read More
Rating: - Good book
While the book provides a few generic ideas for weaning, there is no specific advice on how to wean a nursing child. This book will give you a good idea of what a child-led weaning would look like. I read the book hoping for some ideas on how to wean my 2-year old, but after reading, I decided it would probably just give us both too much stress to try and wean. Now, he is still nursing and I am pregnant. So I can't really say we were at all successful. But it was a very informative read and I would ... Read More
