Rating: - Please add selenium; read below
The cancer-fighting nutrient most proven to date is selenium. A daily supplement of 200 microgram of selenium, has been shown in a large placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical study -- the most prestigious type of scientific study of nutrients and drugs -- to cut the death rate from cancer in half.
Specifically, a large group of people who were given each day a yeast tablet enriched with 200 micrograms (mcg) of selenium had only half the number of deaths from cancer over a seven year period as a similarly large control group who were given a daily yeast tablet containing no selenium. Yeast tablets enriched with 200 mcg of selenium are readily available at pharmacies as well as health stores across the U.S. for about $5 or so for a bottle of 50 to 100 tablets -- only 10 cents or less per day.
The results of this dramatic study were published in the medical profession's own journal: The Journal of the American Medical Association. Nevertheless, most doctors pay no attention to the results. Think about that, selenium (at 10 cents per day or less) has been shown in a large clinical study to cut the death rate from cancer in half and nobody tells the public about it. Incredible! In my opinion, as a research chemist, everybody in the U.S. should take supplemental selenium every day.
Other nutrients which help prevent cancer include vitamin C, vitamin E, CoQ10, and lycopene.
Rating: - A Solid book - when there is so much waffle out there
2005: This is one of a rare breed of nutrition books that is science-based. Every chapter has dozens of reported scientific research articles that supports every thing covered in that chapter. None of this "trust me" self-promoting waffly nonsense. Just solid, specific, well-referenced information on how people (for instance) on Tamoxifen treatment for breast cancer can increase the effectiveness of the treatment AND lower the side effects of it by taking vitamins and minerals. I wish I had the book with me, or I would be more specific. I have lent it to a school chum who is fighting his own cancer battle.
2008: My other half was suffering from crippling abdominal pain and after three days in hospital while being treated like she was making a bit of a mountain out of a molehill (she is uncomplaining to a point of fault) they scanned and found a triangular dark mass on her ovary. Diagnosis cancer made all the more convincing by the nurses switching from treating my other half like she was wasting a hospital bed to treating her like she was condemned to die - and they could not now do enough to help ease her stay. We went home and adopted the dietary recommendations of the book with a vengeance. With regards to supplements we added Selenium and Magnesium. We gave up smoking which was both hard and easy to do. Organic food. 16 weeks later after a mix up with mis-scheduled surgery the ovaries were removed an no cancerous tissue was found in the lump.
Now I cannot say whether the initial diagnosis of cancer was right and the eating and supplements reversed it, or it was mis-diagnosed in the first instance. All I want to say is that 1) there was a hushed conference and a complete change of attitude by the doctors and nursing staff that convinced us we had Cancer to contend with, and 2) reading this book gave us power back, gave us hope and something positive & useful to do while we were waiting for the operation. So maybe we managed to reverse the cancer - who knows, but it was a damn sight better every day to be fighting cancer by shopping for and cooking foods that we thought might help in the fight than to just be counting time waiting for the next (painful) brush with the medical establishment.
Rating: - Excellent except for....
Dr Quillan has written an excellent book. Especially the nutrition aspect. My only complaint is that there are literally hundreds of supplements to choose from. For me, it was a little overwhelming. At times, it felt like searching for a needle in a haystck. After suffering through BRUTAL chemo for 12 treatments that made me DEATHLY ill, I am convinced that I could not go through that again. The oncologist predicts this rare form of lymphoma will be back in about 5 years. So, I consulted a naturopath to help direct me, and to my surprise almost everything she currently has me on is found in Dr. Quillan's book. Plus, I have never eaten healthier in my life. Thank you Dr. Quillan! I hope to prove the oncologist wrong!
Rating: - It' worth it!
Beating cancer with nutrition is giving the reader all the background information about cancer and how to best fight it. In addition, Dr. Quillin outlines his approach for nutritional therapy. The reader can choose to buy the supplements seperately or can buy Immunopower, a combination of powder (for shakes) and pills. Yes, Immunopower has been developed by Dr. Quillin and is quiet expensive. But buying seperately (and I have tried to do this) is even more expensive. Unfortunately, cancer is not an easy or cheap disease to fight. Dr. Quillin talks a lot about Immunopower in his book, but only because it truly is the best thing out there to fight cancer. I was diagnosed with Stage II breast cancer in Sept. 2002. At the time, I only underwent chemo without any additional nutrition therapy. My cancer metastasized and by January of 2004 I was back in chemo. This time, I had met some increadible cancer patients who had battled cancer with the help of Immunopower. I started to take the supplements myself right away. My tumor has since dissapeared!! My doctor called it highly unusual. I am 38 years old, mother of a 5 and a 9 year old boy. My doctor initially felt, that I might at most have 2 years more to live. He is now more confident than even I am, that I will live to see my own grandchildren. My husband is now taking ImmunopwerEZ, just as an insurance. Health, unfortunately, is not cheap, but rather worth every last penny.
Rating: - Great but....
I was just recently diagnosed with cancer and Pat provides some great nutritional information, but when he starts promoting his high priced, high powered immunopower supplement it makes me wonder just what his motives are. Selling his supplements or helping cancer victims. I doubt most cancer patients will be able afford the price of Pat's supplements. Com'on Pat we are dying here. Give us break - a price break.
