One of the first books I bought dealing with precious "rocks" and magick. Full of information.
Rating: - A must-have-edifying for all, even the most closed-minded
The late Scott Cunningham(may he rest in peace in the Summerlands)really hit the mark with this book, and the only sad thing is that he is not around to review some newly used/discovered (or new in popularity, I mean)gems, such as gaspeite, kyanite, labradorite, and spesserite. I also wish he'd included a few pictures next to each stone, (there are pictures included in a inset, but not for all stones reveiwed), which would be difficult to due variations in stones, but would give the reader some clue as to what to look for for each, or, for example, that turquoise often has black inclusions and jade can be lavender, of all colours! I had thought I was seeing a fake, but now know I missed a rare opportunity to buy a lavender jade. I also didn't know it came in white, either. Other than that, given the time period it was written, I use it as a reference constantly, and hold it as a "gold standard" for other books of its ilk. A pity he (Scott) has had to leave the Earth plane, for I am sure there is much more he had to teach us. This book is a must-have for anyone interested in gemology or new-age healing and properties of stones, or even simply those who wear gems as jewelry just because it looks good! Two thumbs up and as I said, this book is indispensible to me./'Nuff said.
Rating: - Useless
This book is a total dissapointment. Even I, as a relatively new craft practicioner, have little to learn from this book. Now don't get me wrong, Cunningham is one of the best writers on contemporary solitary Wicca, and every one of his books is a MUST, except for this one. When it comes to herbs, incense, brews, etc. Cunningham is the best- but he really blew it on this one. I bought this book thinking it would teach me how to incorporate all those crystals and gems I have into magick practice, instead of just using it like any other new age believer- but it certainly doesn't teach that. This book provides information such as how to cleanse sones, empower them, etc. information you can get while surfing the web for five minutes- just go to a search and write crystals or something. And even this information isn't complete, such as stones that shouldn't come in contact with salts, sun, etc. And the encyclopedia section isn't good enough either. This book is useless, buy another of his books instead.
Rating: - I highly recommend this book!
I questioned myself when I first purchased this book, but now I know that I was destined to have it. Ever since I added it to my personal library, I have had to use it several time per week, always having to look up information for fellow wiccan friends on what materials to make their jewelry out of for protection, enlightenment, love attraction, or just guidance. The great part about it was that it gives a description of each crystal or metal, along with astrological, magical, and which deity it connects to. Even better, with many of the entries it gives examples of uses in spells. This is definitely a must have for anyone who is a serious earth-based wiccan.

This is an excellent book to read and use as a thumb reference. It includes folklore, uses , instructions for cleaning you stones, etc., and even a few spells to get started. It is an indespinsable (did I spell that right?) book in my library.
