Rating: - Marvelous!
It's a classic movie. You can't go wrong. All the actors involved are top-knotched. This movie has always been a favorite. We loved it.
Rating: - From an historical sense
I used this movie to end Black History month in my Reading classes having had previosuly seen video footage of the march on Washington with Martin Luther King and the "I Have a Dream" speech. By analyzing both the movie and the speech together, it gave my ninth graders a sense of what it was like back in the 60's regarding race relations. This movie was a daring attempt to show that if we can get beside the color issue that we really are all alike. Most of my students are hispanic and have heard some of the racism issues within their own culture. My hope for the students was to enlighten them and to help visually represent the hours of reading we did regarding this time period in history. To be able to see past a persons color and seek commonalites with all races.
Rating: - One of the best films dealing with interracial love
My mother was always a great fan of Sidney Poitier and followed his career and my father indulged her that. When I saw the 40th Anniversary copy at Walmart, I bought it to remember the memories of this film. My mom and I still watch this film and analyze it from head to toe. When I was younger, I had no tolerance for Spencer Tracy's role, but as I grew older and became a mother myself(two daughters at that), I had to say that I understood his reluctance in giving approval and blessing. It is one thing to bring home someone you may accept, but in these days, things have definitely changed. It could be someone of another color, one of the same sex, and how do you go about that? For one thing, I wasn't down with the daughter wanting approval and then rushing off to be with this man(Sidney or no)to me, I didn't see the rush. If he loved her today, he would love her tommorrow. But the speech that Spencer Tracy made at the end, no one could have said it any better or clearer. He died two weeks after production ended, but I believe he gave a stellar performance. same to Hepburn, Poitier, Houghton and the rest. I believe Kramer gave this movie refined class, taste and dignity.
Rating: - A CLASSIC STILL GOOD TODAY!!!
GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER - 1967
RATING - NR but probably PG for language and adult themes.
RATED - 118 Amazon (4.5/5), 7,545 IMBD (7.7/10), 386,582 Netflix (3.9/5), Roger Ebert (4/4)
STARRING - Sidney Poitier, Katherine Houghton, Spencer Tracy, Katherine Hepburn.
THEME - Racial prejudice.
AWARDS - 2 Academy Awards (Best Actress & Original Screenplay) plus 6 Academy Award nominations, AFI Top 100 Passions, AFI Top 100 Movies, 1969 BAFTA Best Actress & Actor (Hepburn & Tracy).
STORY - The film begins with Joey Drayton (Houghton) and Dr. John Prentice (Poitier) arriving at San Francisco Int'l Airport and we soon learn that after meeting 10 days ago in Hawaii and falling head over heels in love they are going to inform Joey's parents (Hepburn & Tracy) of their plans to be married and ask for their blessing. The problem, of course, is that John is African-American. A perfect son-in-law in every possible way, Joey is absolutely positive her wealthy, liberal (progressive) parents will wholeheartedly endorse their 'mixed' marriage. Wrong!! Being progressive was fine as long as it was someone else's life that was affected. Can the Draytons reconcile their values and the values they raised Joey to live by and the real-life situation at hand? To complicate matters, John is leaving the country that evening and has told them privately, he will cancel the marriage plans if they do not unreservedly support their marriage before he leaves. Many, if not most, of you are familiar with the story. It was shocking at the time. No black man had ever kissed a white woman on the 'big screen'. There were 16 states with laws on the books that made interracial marriages illegal. Stanly Kramer was indeed making a social statement with this movie. As a Jewish man, he knew prejudice first hand. As a result of this movie the laws were changed in all 16 states. Do movies influence culture?? Remember GIDEON'S TRUMPET. Watch this movie for what it was-a statement about racial prejudice but also ask yourself where are the injustices today that need to be fixed? How can we become part of the solution? A great movie then and still today. www.lusreviews.blogspot.com.
Rating: - Guess Who's Coming to Dinner-40th Anniversary Edition
A great opportunity to "fill in the blanks" for an excellent movie has been lost. In spite of the fact that the bonus CD, and the special features have excellent insights from Katherine Houghton, and other significant contributors, there is NO INTERVIEW WITH SIDNEY POITIER. How can that be? Without his input and point of view, this project is severely lacking. He is the only living "star" from the film. There must be some underlying issue why this has happened, but no explanation is given. Also, this edition was an opportunity to add back, or at least reveal the deleted scenes between the young couple which were edited out of the original film, which left the "romance" out of the "Love Story of Today." There was also a scene filmed with Katherine Houghton and Spencer Tracey designed to give "Joey" the depth her character needed to be more believable. Katherine Houghton alludes to her frustration in her commentary. These issues have never been dealt with honestly, and a new DVD release is the perfect opportunity to set the record straight without even changing the content of the final cut. I am a great fan of this film, but what a disappointment to have so much left out of this edition which is a noble effort, but a "Dinner" without the dessert.
