Rating: out of 5 stars - Great Book
There are more to these For Dummies books than many people would think. The author's sense of humor, knowledge, and clear descriptions combined with the easy to understand and follow, For Dummies format make for an informative, enjoyable, and useful book. I think this book would also be useful for intermediate golfers. The illustrations would be a good review.

Rating: out of 5 stars - This is a good one.
I borrowed this book from my cousin who just had it sitting on the shelf gathering dust. I am an intermediate golfer and have read many books. This is one of the best ones I have read. I think the reason I like it is because it reinforces things I have already learned. The statements regarding "balance" and the "pivot point" are superb.

Rating: out of 5 stars - Adds to a beginer's knowledge, but cannot teach the game.
This is a great book for a beginner, once he or she decides that another terribly frustrating hobby is needed in life.
As noted, it gives an overview of the game, some of its history and the rules of etiquette . It will let one know about "playing through (with the mantra "Play fast"), and how to comport oneself at a country club.
Like another, I picked up golf this past year, and the book gave me a brief overview of the game. I agree with another reviewer that the lessons to build your swing are well written and informative, but I disagree with the reviewer who suggests that the money spent on a good professional coach to learn the swing is better spent here.
For that, no video, or book is a substitute for a good live teacher, and a few hundred buckets of balls.

Rating: out of 5 stars - Great book for a beginning golfer!
This is a great book for a beginner or someone not sure if they want to start playing golf. The book gives a brief overview of golf history, an explanation of golf equipment, and lessons on how to build a golf swing, and some tips on how to play the game. Although Gary McCord peppers this book with some corny jokes, his knowledge and enthusiasm for the game make the book a great overview for a beginner.
I just recently started playing golf and the book gave me a quick and entertaining overview of the game. Although the lessons to build your swing are well written and informative, I would recommend looking for books devoted to teaching the golf swing, watching videos, or taking lessons from golf pro if you are serious. The instruction in the book is inadequate as a sole source of information for learning how to correctly swing a golf club. Get this book as an introduction, but find something else to learn a great swing.

Rating: out of 5 stars - No Hype...No BS...Great Golf
Do you want to play great golf? Before you pay $50/hr for some slouch who could care less about your golf game...give this book a shot. I almost didn't, because I never thought I'd buy a "Dummies" book. I bought this as a reinforcement for golf game that was going backwards instead of forwards.
McCord has put together all the tips I learned as a youngster. This book is packed with plenty of multipaned photos...they give you a sense of what is happening moment to moment through your golf swing. The photos don't just show you the right way to swing, but he also shows you the wrong way to swing with multipaned photos so you have a base of reference between right and wrong.
He goes through all parts of your game...preshot thought process, backswing, swing, and follow through...for the short game, putting, and the long ball. He even packs it with tips that you can actually take to the range with you.
If you don't lower your golf score by ten strokes in the first month...I'd be shocked.
