Rating: - Awesome
Vioce Flynn and his main character Mitch Rapp continue to deliver in this excellent political thriller. Every book he has written has been outstanding. His faced-paced writing style and well-researched books help remind us of the excellence of our country's defensive and offensive capabilities, in spite of political interference!
Rating: - Move over Jack Ryan
If you are thinking about venturing into this spy series you may as well start from the beginning. Mitch Rapp is an exciting character and his exploits over the years are page turning. Start at the beginning and read in order for the best roller coaster.
Rating: - Satisfying Read
The Mitch Rapp novels are predictable, and the characters other than Rapp (and his wife) tend to be unidimensional -- but the books are a fabulous read -- like potato chips that you want to gobble down. The information on how various special forces operate is very realistic, and of course we all hope there are a few Mitch Rapps out there for real..... This is the core of Flynn's novels' attraction -- he describes people with intestinal fortitude and clear eyes who see the real enemies we face.
Rating: - The Fizzle Out to Summer Reading....
This summer was the summer of the light read including Deception Point by Brown, Lisey's Story by King, a stalled attempt at the Bourne Identity by the Ludlam group and finally ending with Act of Treason by Vince Flynn.
Of all of them (excluding Borne) which just didn't grab me, Act of Treason was the most cliche and I have to say disappointing in the genre of grocery store novels. The description of the book on the back cover pretty much describes the whole novel and really nothing beyond the back cover really takes place.
The characters are not very well developed and the biggest disappointment for me was the lack of interesting technology used by the characters who were placed across the alphabet of secret agencies - FBI, CIA, KGB etc. Research was lacking. A book may be predictable but it can still keep you engaged if the research is thorough and well presented through the characters.
Why did I finish it? Because of only one character - Mitch Rapp - the iconclastic CIA operative who puts the puzzle together and solves problems in his own very physical, bull in a china shop, way. He is the only character worth mentioning and the only one that made the book worth buying and reading.
Flynn can write, but he needs to write better; research his stuff a little more, and not make the story arcs so darn predicatable. If he doesn't even Mitch Rapp may not be able to save the day, the ink on the page, and the dollar in Flynn's wallet.
Rating: - Weakest of Flynn's Novels
I have enjoyed Flynn's novels since Term Limits, but I hate to admit that I think this was his weakest moment. The story seemed to be put together too fast, and the characters would appear extremely one dimensional if a reader had not read the previous Mitch Rapp novels. Here, Rapp appears as a stereotypical gung-ho "do things my way" agent with little or no thought process. While he was always anti-politician, Flynn drills it into the reader's head at every opportunity.
While the twist of who the terrorists are is a nice departure, the bad guys also did not have much depth. Of course Flynn always makes his politicians the most unsavory characters, (and in his previous efforts it is usually enjoyable) but the characters in Act of Treason are way too cookie cutter, even for Flynn.
The ending sealed the deal for me, which I thought extremely unrealistic and a fantastic departure of the usual rationalism Flynn evokes; the ending seemed to be the least thought out segment of the book. Disappointing.
