Rating: - The Gear You Have to Get!
Journeys we don't want to take--we've all been there or will have to go there one day. As a health professional I assist people on those journeys. Now I have some essential gear to suggest for the road--Amy Givler's guide for navigating the cancer maze. Dr. Givler's style is like a long draw of well water for a parched traveller. She relates her personal journey on the cancer road; you are with her from the first discovery until the present. Along the way, you meet others who are trodding the same path with their families and friends. Givler attacks the hard questions but doesn't leave you hanging for answers. This book is reader-friendly--informative yet warm, frank yet hopeful. I am already suggesting it to friends, pastors, and purchasing it for a local oncologist. "Hope in the Face of Cancer"--gear you have to get!
Rating: - Searching for Meaning
Dr. Givler's book is full of practical advice and individual medical case scenarios, written in simple language, that help the reader on `the journey you did not choose.' Whether you are the spouse, the friend, the relative, or the treating doctor, this book is for you. It provides a framework from which to start if `cancer' has become a part of your life, or the life of someone you care about or for whom you provide care. Dr. Givler's book, along with "A Guide to Medical Resources" outlined within the book, would have been very helpful, not only for me, but my mother and her siblings, since my grandmother died of cervical cancer is 1984. (I have since passed my copy of this wonderful book on to one of my mother's sisters, and I have already asked a dear friend of mine if she would like a copy - her brother-in-law has cancer.) By the time you get to the last chapter of Amy Givler's book, "Searching for Meaning," you're familiar enough with her rhythmic style of writing that you expect, and need the profound insights and quotes. Dr. Givler's book gives perspective on a life changing, life threatening situation in the context of faith, something many unknowingly search for and few ever find.
Rating: - Practical and readable
AS the wife of a family physician, I found Dr. Givler's book to be informative and readable. A cancer survivor herself, she knows the pitfalls of trying to wade through complicated and lengthy guides on this subject, and she cuts through medical jargon to give the reader practical advice on emotional adjustment, "trustworthy" medical treatment, getting specialized help, facing family and friends, coping with treatment and exploring the spiritual dimension of dealing with this illness. Her guide to medical resources will be a boon to those facing cancer for the first time. Her writing style is graceful and non-condescending--in addition to being a physician and cancer survivor, Dr. Givler is a real communicator.
Rating: - Much needed compassionate approach
As a RN, I know the "fear" that seems to move in when one is given a diagnosis of "cancer." Dr. Givler has addressed the fear; she has walked through the feelings, the wonder, the concern and her approach is very to the point, very compassionate, yet quite straight forward to those who would find themself facing the word "cancer" in their own life. Sharing her personal journey and her dependence upon God comes through very clearly yet "quietly." Thank you for the book!It is one I will quickly share with those in need. From a friend in West Monroe, Louisiana!
Rating: - Just What the Doctor Ordered
This is THE perfect book to give to the friend who's just been diagnosed with cancer. Using her own experience as a physician and as a cancer survivor, Dr. Givler cuts through the paralyzing fear to offer hope as well as invaluable information and resources. In this book, the author hits that rare combination of transparency and authority. Our company just bought six copies. As soon as we hear of a colleague or a customer with a cancer diagnosis, this survival guide is what we will send.
