Rating: - Terrible math, adequate conceptual explanations
First, the positive points of the book:
1. The explanations of economic concepts, vocabulary terms, etc. are short, clear, and readable.
2. The practice problems are varied, appropriate, and have reasonable contexts. There is even a moderate amount of variation of difficulty level.
Now the negative aspects of the book:
1. The author chooses the most confusing way possible to explain many types of problems. For example, in explaining the fact that 10% of 90 is 9, the author uses the following vocabulary: 90 is the "base" (okay), 10% is the "rate" (okay), and 9 is the "percentage". WHAT??? Try explaining in class that 10% is not the "percentage", in fact 9 is. Good luck!
2. The math content is light. In the most aggregious example, the author does not even present the basic equation for compound interest, instead relying on lengthy tables (as if the scientific calculator hadn't been invented yet). Inconsistently, he then turns around and presents the related formula for present value, without giving it the context or meaning that it would have had compound interest been explained.
3. Similar books on business math cover more content. For example, the words "bond" and "annuity" don't even appear in the index.
4. There are some errors and confusing points, although I consider this a relatively minor complaint compared to those above.
For an inexpensive alternative with much better explanations (but poorer example problems) see "Business Math Demystified".
