The feverish Hellboy II: The Golden Army is a very busy sequel that might have looked unhinged in the hands of a less visionary director than Guillermo del Toro. Ron Perlman returns as Hellboy, aka "Red," the Dark Horse Comics demon-hero with roots in the mythical world but personal ties in the human realm. Still working, as he was in Hellboy, for a secret department of the federal government that deals (as in "Men In Black") with forces of the fantastic, Red and his colleagues take on a royal elf (Luke Goss) determined to smash a longtime truce between mankind and the forces of magic. Meanwhile, Red's relationship with girlfriend Liz (Selma Blair), who can burst into flames at will, is going through a rocky stage observed by Red's fishy friend Abe (Doug Jones), himself struck by love in this film. Del Toro brilliantly integrates the ordinary and extraordinary, diving into an extended scene set in a troll market barely hidden behind the façade of typical city streets. He also unleashes a forest monster that devastates an urban neighborhood, but then--interestingly--brings a luminous beauty to the same area as the creature (an "elemental") succumbs to a terrible death. Del Toro's art direction proves masterful, too, in a climactic battle set in a clockworks-like stronghold tucked away in rugged Irish landscape. But it's really the juxtaposition of visual marvels with not-so-unusual relationship issues that gives Hellboy II a certain jaunty appeal hard to find in other superhero movies. --Tom Keogh Stills from Hellboy II: The Golden Army (Click for larger image)

Rating: - An entertaining horror-comedy blockbuster
"Hellboy II", ably directed by Guillermo Del Toro, picks up where the last film left off -- Hellboy is still working for a super-secret government agency in charge of cleaning up (and covering up) supernatural events. And he's still a rebel, blowing things up and punching folks out as the mood strikes him. Del Toro and his crew clearly had a lot of fun making this, with a flippant, what-the-heck attitude coming through in every scene. The film cheerfully references "Lord Of The Rings," "Indiana Jones," ... Read More
Rating: - Hellboy II - war is heck
I purchased Hellboy II after reading a number of the reviews at Amazon. The first flick was enjoyable and I thought the second would be better. Turns out I was wrong. The special effects were generally good and the action sequences fair to good with the fight scene between the dark elf and HB at the end the most enjoyable. The exception is the an early scene in which HB and crew try to fight off thousands of tiny fairies with single shot pistols - the only victims of the fairy mass attacks were the non ... Read More
Rating: - Great Movie
Received my copy from amazon last week and is awesome. The Picture is very clear, dark areas looks great, the sound and the extras amazing. You can't cry for it, is a bargain for this price.
Rating: - 4.5 Stars: A good old-fashioned dark fairy tale
Guillermo del Torro is one of the most visionary directors working the scene right now; watch "Pan's Labyrinth" if you have any doubts. Or watch "Hellboy II: The Golden Army." At first, it's a horrible title--kinda cheesy. But after watching the movie, you get it: This is a fairy tale, more Grimm than Anderson, with a hero who is destined to bring about the destruction of mankind. Sounds like a real trooper.
In "Golden Army," Red and his comrades must face a...well...a golden army. Actually, ... Read More
