Through a wash of shimmering, overdriven guitars and thunderous drums, a thickly accented Glaswegian voice rises and falls across a soundscape of sweeping expanse. And so goes the Twilight Sad's full-length debut, Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters, nine songs of ambitious scope and widescreen proportions. Each track is a mini-epic right down to its ornate title, like the blazing, blaring "Talking with Fireworks / Here, It Never Snowed," and "That Summer, At Home I Had Become The Invisible Boy," an evocative and affecting account of adolescent romantic bewilderment. The band's nearly overwhelming wall of sound means there's no shortage of aural stimulus to fill up the listener's ears, but penetrate the surface of this circuitous and clamorous record, and you'll find the Twilight Sad are concealing bewitching songs underneath all that noise. --Ben Heege

what can i say, refreshing to and more than enjoyable. A great cd whether its american or zimbabwean. Give it a listen and if you thing the scottish accent is too much you need to go blow short up a long anacondas pipe.

This one made my "Best Albums of 2007" list (see http://www.amazon.com/Best-Albums-of-2007/lm/R1TUKG73VXM141/ref=cm_lm_byauthor_title_full). I am not sure how I found out about this band, probably from one of the music blogs I subscribe to or from metacritic.com. The singer sings with a thick Scottish accent which makes it hard to understand the words sometimes but it also makes it fun to sing along with. All in all, a very admirable debut.
Rating: - Uneven but promising
After hearing the first two stunning tracks of this CD for the first time, I started thinking this album might be the Next Best Thing...and it's not. Unfortunately, a couple songs follow that lack melody and aren't that fantastic. At times these guys make beautiful noise, and at other times, well, they just make noise. This album is below mediocre, I wish I never took the time to listen to this rubbish. To buy this album is to buy nice looking coaster (because the album art doesn't offend me).
If you care for my advice, do not waste the time buying this album or listening to it...This band might be something else live but they have nothing spectacular in this album. The only benefit in buying this album could be the possibility that it allows them to afford a few more music lessons.
Rating: - One of 2007's top albums
I can't stop listening to this album. Singer James Graham's thick brogue is startling at first, then heartily endearing- much like much of the album's material. The thick layers of noise, overdriven guitar, and accordion pull you into a wash of atmosphere and emotion, where the epic scope of the songs buried underneath tear through to your very core. Anyone who knocks this album for Graham's accent either simply didn't give him a chance or has no taste in music.
