Editorial Review: Balance your need for productivity with great multimedia performance with the HP Pavilion dv9030us notebook PC, which features an amazingly bright, widescreen 17-inch BrightView display--perfect for multitasking between document windows and watching movies in their native aspect ratio. It offers a cool, modern look with a durable, high-gloss piano black finish and inlaid design inspired by Zen rock gardens as well as a subtle blue backlit media control panel that responds to the slightest touch. It also has an integrated 1.3-megapixel WebCam, enabling easy video conferencing via VoIP and video IM chats. You can easily burn your home video productions to DVD for friends and family with the dual-layer, multi-format DVD/CD burner, which enables you to store up to 8.5 GB of data on a DL disc. It also includes LightScribe technology for personalized silkscreen-quality, laser-etched CD/DVD labels created right in the drive. Enjoy movies or music in seconds with the external DVD or music buttons to launch HP QuickPlay (which bypasses the boot process). Control playback settings from up to 10 feet away with the included remote control, which stores conveniently in the ExpressCard slot. Easily share digital photos with the included HP Photosmart Premiere software. This notebook is powered by the Intel Core 2 Duo processor, which offers a 20 percent performance boost over its predecessor while using 28 percent less power--so you get the benefit of a powerful dual-core PC plus all the benefits of mobility. The dual-execution core T5500 Core 2 Duo processor provides an optimized, multithreaded architecture for improved gaming and multitasking performance, and it features a 1.66 GHz speed, lightning quick 667 MHz system bus, and large 2 MB L2 cache. Other hardware features include a large 200 GB storage capacity from dual 100 GB hard drives, 2 GB of installed RAM (maxing capacity), an integrated Nvidia GeForce 7600 video/graphics card with up to 256 MB of discrete video RAM, tri-mode Wi-Fi LAN (802.11a/b/g), a wide variety of connectivity options, multi-format memory card reader, and Windows XP Media Center edition operating system. This is a Windows Vista capable PC, and it's also Windows Vista Premium ready. The Basics - Hard Drive: You'll be able to store large libraries of digital audio, video, and photos on the dual 100 GB hard drives (5400 RPM), for 200 GB of total storage--one of the largest capacities you'll find currently in multimedia notebooks (October 2006).
- Processor: The Intel Core 2 Duo T5500 processor has a 1.66 GHz processor speed, super-fast 667 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and large 2 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)
The Intel Core 2 Duo processor has two computational execution cores in a single processor, providing greater system response when running multi-threaded applications simultaneously with no significant increase in power consumption. It's optimized for multitasking and is ready to support the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. It can simultaneously run multiple demanding applications--such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching business productivity applications--while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background. Some of the advanced Intel innovations of the Core 2 Duo processor include: - Smart Memory Access: Improves system performance by hiding memory latency, thus optimizing the use of available computer data bandwidth to provide data to the processor when and where it is needed.
- Advanced Digital Media Boost: Effectively doubles the execution speed for instructions used widely in multimedia and graphics applications.
- Dynamic Power Coordination: Coordinates Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology and idle power-management state (C-states) transitions independently per core to help save power.
- Deeper Sleep with Dynamic Cache Sizing: Saves power by flushing cache data to system memory during periods of inactivity to lower CPU voltage.
- Memory: The 2 GB of built-in memory maximizes the capacity of this notebook, which is a little small for multimedia-centric laptops. But you'll be able to handle immersive 3-D video games, video editing, graphics-intensive presentations, and multiple open business productivity applications right out of the box.
- CD/DVD Drive: Offering the latest in DVD writing technology, the multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with writing both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features 4x DVD-R DL Write Once, 2.4x DVD+R DL Write Once, 8x DVD+R, 4x DVD+RW, 8x DVD-R, 4x DVD-RW, 16x DVD-ROM, 40x CD-R, 24x CD-RW, and 40x CD-ROM speeds.
This LightScribe DVD+/-RW drive lets you laser-etch silkscreen quality text and images on to CDs and DVDs . Your software, PC and discs work together for a no-hassle way to burn just the labels you want. After you burn content, just flip the disc over, reinsert and burn your label--anything from a simple title to a full-disc work of art.
- Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a 101-key keyboard and a touchpad with on/off button and dedicated vertical/horizontal Scroll Up/Down pad. It also includes two quick-launch buttons (HP QuickPlay Music and DVD).
Screen, Graphics and Sound The 17-inch WXGA+ high-definition BrightView widescreen (1440 x 900 resolution) provides a 45 percent larger picture for DVD movies than a 15-inch screen. Video is powered by the Nvidia GeForce 7600 graphics card, which was chosen by PC World magazine as one of the 100 Best Products of 2006 (July, 2006). It has 256 MB of discrete video RAM for home-theater quality video. It features NVidia's PureVideo technology--which provides great picture clarity, smooth video, accurate color, and precise image scaling for video content. It also offers full support for Microsoft DirectX 9.0 Shader Model 3.0 and true high dynamic-range (HDR) lighting. And it's ready for the next step in graphics processing--SLI technology (Scalable Link Interface)--which delivers twice the performance of a single GPU configuration by allowing two graphics cards to run in parallel. Connectivity and Expansion Slots The Intel PRO wireless LAN 3945ABG provides a tri-mode network connection (supporting 802.11a/b/g), with throughput up to 54 Mbps at 5 GHz (802.11a) and 2.4 GHz (802.11g). It also includes a next-generation ExpressCard 54/34 card slot (replacing the PCMCIA slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. You get a very good offering of connectivity options, which does include super-fast USB 2.0 and FireWire: - 4 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
- 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
- 1 VGA monitor port
- 1 S-Video port for connecting to a TV
- 1 ExpressCard/54 Slot (also supports ExpressCard/34)

It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems). Preloaded System and Software The pre-installed Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 is essentially Windows XP Professional Edition with a variety of tools to help you to create, organize, and enjoy digital media ranging from music to home movies to photo slide shows. The HP Photosmart Premier photo and imaging software makes digital photography fast and easy by helping you organize, edit, protect, and share your digital pictures and video clips. Sonic's DigitalMedia Plus makes it easy and intuitive to back up your pictures, videos, and music onto DVD-R/+R media for safekeeping. Rating: - Worked for a year
I bought this laptop in November 2008. It was great for a year. A week ago, the NVidia graphics card was shot. The card wired into the motherboard. To replace it, you do for $800. To do it on your own, you buy the motherboard for $400. I do not think that this laptop worth anything.
Also, this same problem happened to one of my teammates.
Rating: - Very disappointed
I so wanted HP to satisfy me--I like the company and hoped it would be a great laptop. However I have been repeatedly so disappointed that I decided to never again buy an HP computer--and I buy one a year. the computer does strange things for no reason...and example is the common problem among HP users: the CapsLock key constantly "sticks" and can't be unstuck without rebooting, among other strange happenings. HP Customer service is so bad I simply decided to forget them and never buy HP again. ... Read More
Rating: - Do not buy HP products - very poor customer service
Do not buy this product because no matter how much you like this product you will eventually have to call customer service. You will have to speak to someone (several people) from India who will not be able to help you. They don't care to help you, they will tell you anything to get rid of you. I spent six hours on the phone in the last two days and spoke to seven different people until I could finally speak to a supervisor. They have no problem lying to you and every person I spoke to had a different ... Read More

Rating: - Worst laptop ever - learn from me and buy a Mac!
I was thrilled to buy this laptop over a year and a half ago. It replaced a reliable Compaq laptop that lasted me over five years with no problems. This computer looks gorgeous but the numerous bugs have been a huge issue for me. The quick play does not work consistently- it tends to launch the entire computer - not conserving energy as it is supposed to. The Light Scribe sounds good but is complicated and annoying to use. The large screen is beautiful, but the computer is heavy as a result, and it ... Read More
