A 1936 vehicle for Shirley Temple, Captain January is actually a remake of a 1922 feature starring Baby Peggy Montgomery as an orphan informally adopted by the lighthouse keeper who rescues her from a storm. The Temple version, directed by David Butler, finds the little star playing a child named, well, Star, who is rescued and taken in by a salty old lighthouse-keeper known as Captain January (Guy Kibbee). Like a briny variation on Bret Harte's classic story, "The Luck of Roaring Camp," Captain January finds Star nurtured by a community of aging sailors who adore her, including her hoofer friend Paul (Buddy Ebsen), with whom Star sings and dances one of the most-beloved numbers from a Shirley Temple movie, "At the Codfish Ball." Star's fable-like paradise is disrupted by the appearance of a truant officer (Sara Haden), who determines the child isn't receiving proper schooling and overall care. That decision leads to a bit of conflict and despair, but with Temple wiggling, singing, and charming her way through her character's mostly enchanted circumstances, it's not hard to have faith in happy endings. The film is offered in both its original black-and-white presentation and in colorized form. Special features include a trailer and clips from Temple's appearance at the presentation of a memorial to Will Rogers. --Tom Keogh
Four year old star (Temple) has been living with Captain January (Guy Kibbee) ever since he rescued her form a shipwreck when she was a baby. Now their happy life together is unexpectedly threatened when the town's new truant officer tries to take her away from the lighthouse keeper and place her in an institution.System Requirements:Running Time: 75 minutesFormat: DVD MOVIE Genre: COMEDY Rating: G UPC: 024543249283 Manufacturer No: 2234928

Rating: out of 5 stars - Cutsie melodrama
Yes, Shirley Temple is unbelievably cute. And her one dance with Buddy Epson is amusing. But the rest of the film is treacle, based on a highly predictable and melodramatic story designed to exploit the emotions of the masses. The colorized version, by the way, is terrible; one of the worst I've seen. What a way to kill an hour and a half.

Rating: out of 5 stars - An Oldie but Goodie
I had been waiting a long time for Amazon to get this movie in on DVD. As soon as they got it, they sent me notice and I bought it. It is a cute movie. Makes me remember the days when I was a little girl and watched the Shirley Temple Theater every Sunday with my big sister. Most people remember the song in the movie, "At the Codfish Ball", but my favorite is "The Right Somebody to Love." Good family movie. Kids need more like this these days.

Rating: out of 5 stars - WE LOVE SHIRLEY TEMPLE!!!
I just had to get this movie for my young daughter. My daughter had a tap dance recital, and the song they were dancing to was "Cod Fish Ball", which is in this movie. She has watched this over & over :) The whole movie is great, but our favorite part was watching Shirley Temple dance with Buddy Ebsen.

Rating: out of 5 stars - A RESTORED SCENE HAS BEEN PUT BACK IN!!!!!!!!
This is one of Shirley's best movies and, the color version looks fantastic!!! The print used is in very good condition and the color just looks quite stunning!!

The exciting thing of all about this release is that there is a fantastic restored scene that has not been seen since it was first released!!

This scene happens after Shirley ends her "AT THE CODFISH BALL" number. The scene where the old bearded guy tells Shirley about "spitting", and the scene ... Read More

Rating: out of 5 stars - Enchanting and delightful!
This enchanting tail about an orphan adopted by an old sea captain will capture your heart and your family's heart. In another heart warming and spectacularly acted film by Ms Temple, you won't want to miss a single moment. Why not get family values back and start watching these with your children instead of putting them on the computer?

Great dancing scenes from some famous actors and of course the usual singing round this great film out! I wish they made like this today!
