Rating: - Loved it!
My favorite thing about the book is MILDMAY! I totally fell in love with him. He talks like a real person and I love how he's always referring to these random things as if you should know what he's talking about. It makes it seem like he's a real character from another world. But you do eventually figure out what he's talking about. There are so many details in this story that are very important and make it more complex and colorful. But definitely it's the strong characters that make the story as ... Read More
Rating: - The main character ruins it, sadly
The details and imagination and world-building of this novel are excellent, I think. The city of Melusine is so vividly drawn, its history so compelling. Many of the characters are just as vivid and compelling, especially one of the two narrators, Mildmay the Fox. What a sympathetic, intriguing and wonderfully drawn character! He uses the word "snarky" a little too much, but I forgive him, since he's so awesome otherwise.
The other narrator, Felix Harrogate, unfortunately is awful. Selfish, ... Read More
Rating: - A creative and unique story...
The main story is about two men, Felix Harrowgate, and Mildmay the Fox. Both had a similar childhood, but each attained a different place in the fictional world of Melusine. Felix is a Cabaline Wizard, who lives at the palace of Mirador in splendor, and is involved in the court of Lord Stephen. Mildmay lives in the poorer part of the city, and is a cat-burglar/assassin by trade.
Through a series of events, Felix is literally driven mad by an evil wizard named Malkar. Using bad magic, Malkar uses Felix ... Read More
Rating: - Boring.
I tried to read this book and adjust to some of the quirks of the characters, but I found nothing worth tieing into. The character Mildmay was somewhat interesting, but the rest of the story was so bizarre and unreachable from my frame of reference that I just put it down. The author is trying to reach a specific group with this series and character set and I think that she alienates many readers in the process. When you write for a specific audience you run that risk.
Unreadable for me.
Rating: - Not sure I would read it again
First off, I will give the reason for all three stars:
Plot -- good, nice flow
Characters -- decently drawn
Overall story -- good, engaging
The drawbacks that pulled this down to a 3 star and make me think that, had I read the review I'm writing, I would not have read this book:
The book/writing is confusing to say the least. I have read books before that went in first person POV that switched characters while remaining in that POV, but not like this. Every ... Read More
