Editorial Review: CPQ V4440US PRESARIO NOTEBOOK COMPUTER
Take your computing life with you wherever you roam with the Compaq Presario V4440US, designed for the budget-minded mobile professional. Featuring a cool, modern metallic design, the V4440US weighs only 6.3 pounds and is as thin as 1.32 inches. The widescreen 15.4-inch BrightView display is easily viewable even in direct sunlight and is great for watching DVD movies in their natural aspect ratio. It's powered by a battery-sipping 1.7 GHz Intel Pentium M (Centrino) 735A processor, and also offers a 100 GB hard drive, 512 MB of installed RAM (2 GB maximum), multi-format DVD/CD burner with dual layer support, 54g wireless connectivity, ExpressCard 54/34 card slot, and Windows XP Professional edition. The Basics - Hard Drive: The 100 GB hard drive (4200 RPM) is above average in size for notebook PCs, and it's roomy enough to store business productivity applications, all your important documents and presentations, and a good-sized digital audio and video library.
- Processor: The 1.7 GHz Pentium M 735a (Centrino) processor is in the lower third of the speed spectrum for this processor class (January 2006). It is well equipped for office productivity software tasks, from complex spreadsheets to databases. The Pentium M processor is designed specifically for low-power mobile usage, and it features the latest in power-saving technologies--ensuring you push your battery and productivity to the max. It also has a large 2 MB L2 cache--which will help speed up your system's performance--and a 400 MHz front-side bus (FSB). (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)
- Memory: The 512 MB of installed RAM (333 MHz) is enough to get you started, but you'll want to add more RAM to handle today's demanding multimedia and productivity suites. It has a 2 GB maximum RAM capacity.
- CD/DVD Drive: Offering the latest in DVD writing technology, this PC's multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features 4x DVD-R DL Write Once, 2.4x DVD+R DL Write Once, 8x DVD+R, 4x DVD+RW, 8x DVD-R, 4x DVD-RW, 8x DVD-ROM, 40x CD-R, 24x CD-RW, and 40x CD-ROM speeds.
- Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a full-sized 101-key keyboard and touchpad with four-way scroll zone on/off button and dedicated vertical scroll up/down pad.
Screen, Graphics and Sound The 15.4 WXGA high-definition BrightView widescreen display can be easily viewed even in direct sunlight. It has a 1280 X 800 resolution, which provides an 18 percent larger picture when viewing the same DVD movie as a standard 15.0-inch screen, plus 30 percent more screen information. Video and graphics are powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900, which provides 128 MB of shared video memory. It also has 16-bit Sound Blaster Pro-compatible audio and internal stereo speakers. Connectivity and Expansion Slots The V4440US has an integrated Intel Pro/Wireless network LAN, which is fully compatible with 802.11b/g wireless networks. It also includes a next-generation ExpressCard 54/34 card slot, which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. You get a decent offering of connectivity options, which does include super-fast USB 2.0 and FireWire: - 4 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
- 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
- 1 VGA monitor port
- 1 S-Video port for connecting to a TV
- 1 PCMCIA (or PC Card) slot (Type I/II, 32-bit)
- 1 headphone jack and 1 microphone jack
- IR Expansion Port 2 connector
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems). Preloaded System and Software This system comes with the Windows XP Professional Edition (which adds Microsoft's IIS Web server, back-up and recovery utilities, Remote Desktop, and other enhanced business features) with Service Pack 2 featuring Advanced Security Technologies, which helps to reduce unwanted downloads and pop-ups while surfing the Web. It also comes preloaded with Microsoft Works (for working with word processing and spreadsheet documents), Symantec Norton Internet Security 2006 (with 60 days of LiveUpdate), Adobe Acrobat Reader, Sonic Digital Media Plus, InterVideo WinDVD, Apple iTunes, Adobe PhotoShop Album STE, Muvee autoProducer, Microsoft Money, MSN Encarta Plus, Microsoft Office Student and Teacher Edition (60 Day Trial Version), and HP PhotoSmart Premier for editing and organizing your digital photos. Dimensions and Weight This lightweight notebook is easily portable at just 5.4 pounds. It measures 14.11 x 10.16 x 1.32/1.66 inches (LxWxH) Power This notebook is powered by a 6-cell rechargeable lithium-ion battery, which offers up to 3 hours of battery life (dependent upon computing conditions). Rating: - Generally Good Value, Some Shortcomings
I bought this as my personal laptop about a year ago. In general, I am pleased with it. Most laptops in this price range do not have XP Pro, which was my main reason for buying it. (I needed XP Pro to run an Oracle 10g data base, and this laptop does a pretty good job of it. I upgraded to 2GB using Kingston memory, also recommended.)
In general, I am pleased. There have been a couple of nuisance issues. One is the keyboard - very flimsy design IMHO. Essentially each very thin keycap ... Read More

Regarding the issue of the touchpad... you CAN turn off the touchpad via the control panel. I use a mouse only and have no problems with accidental touchpad clicks. As for the available hard drive space... there is a recovery partition (Drive D:) which takes up about 10GB. You can delete that partition if you like and add that space to your C: drive. But make sure you create the recovery disks first so that you can restore the computer to factory-shipped condition if you have a hard-disk failure or ... Read More

I really am pleased with this value priced computer. Performance wise it beats the top of the line celeron chip notebooks that cost about what I paid. As configured the 4200 rpm hard drive is a little slow but I'm not complaining. The CD/DVD drive is very noisy. The notebook does not run hot even after hours of use. I can actually keep this on my lap. You will know it is in your lap but I do not find it to be uncomfortably or painfully warm.

Rating: - My First PC notebook....
From the moment I took the notebook out of the box I've had nothing but fun. The set up was easy, I was on line in less than 10 minutes. I've had so much fun with this box, I finally broke down and got rid of my dial up and got wireless DSL.
I never had a PC, but I knew how this one worked. I have a Mac background, and found WindowsXP to be very easy to use.
The keyboard is quite, and responsive. The widescreen really makes a big difference, the LCD screen is beautiful.
