The Basics
- Hard Drive: A welcome size for road warriors, the 100 GB Enhanced IDE hard drive is a bit above average in size for notebook PCs, and faster than average at 5400 RPM. It's also user removable, enabling you to upgrade its size at some point down the line.
- Processor: The Intel Centrino Pentium M 750 processor is designed specifically for mobile computing, offering a balanced level of mobile-optimized processor technology, good mobile performance, and exceptional value. It features a Deep Sleep state, which helps enable longer battery life by minimizing the power consumption of the processor during brief periods of inactivity. The 1.86 GHz speed is in the upper-middle of the speed spectrum for this processor (as of autumn, 2005), and it also offers a fast 533 MHz front-side bus (FSB) speed and a large 2 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance.)
- Memory: The 512 MB of built-in memory (1 x 512 MB, PC4200, DDR2 SDRAM) is a good start for power users, and it offers a very fast 533 MHz speed. It has two memory slots in total, with a maximum memory expansion up to 2 GB (2 x 1024 MB). It has one service-accessible memory slot and one user-accessible slot.
- CD/DVD Drive: The double-layer DVD drive is compatible with a wide range of formats, including both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs, CD-RW discs, and dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can hold up to 8.5 GB of data--great for backing up your MP3 collection or your most important documents. Screen, Graphics and Sound
The M55-S329 has a 14-inch TruBrite TFT screen with a widescreen 1280 x 768-pixel resolution. Video and graphics are powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900, which uses Intel Dynamic Video Memory Technology (DVMT) and provides up to 128 MB of shared video memory. The M55-S329 has an integrated Atheros 802.11b/g wireless-LAN that supports Atheros SuperG technology, which uses packet-bursting, fast frames, on-the-fly data compression/decompression, and dual-channel bonding to enhance throughput to double that of 802.11g. I bought the Toshiba Satellite M55-S329 December 28, 2006 and I love it. I haven't had any problems with it and I even bought it refurbished! I didn't previously have a laptop but I had been looking for one and knew I wanted one. Then my husband got me a Sling Media Slingbox Pro for Christmas. So I did some research and found the Toshiba Satellite M55-S329 had some of the best reviews for the price. I bought this computer for my wife, who owned an older model Satellite. I thought she would be the only one to use it, but it has become the favorite computer in our apartment (for some reason we have 3... don't ask why). It's plenty fast, and the stereo speakers are excellent for computer speakers.
Rating: - Desktop Replacement That Travels Well
I grudgingly got a Satellite after my Inspiron burned out, and I didn't expect to warm to it as quickly as I did. It's faster, brighter, lighter, and much more versatile, particularly in multimedia. Keyboard, screen, and other basic components are solid.

Toshiba Satellite M55-S329 (bought at Best Buy)
I have had this machine for awhile and these are my impressions so far. I use it for running MS Access, ASP.NET, SQL server and TSQL development. I am also learning Macromedia Studio 8. All these programs run as well as on a desktop.
This notebook feels very well built. None of the components feel cheap.
