Designed for the budget-oriented consumer, Gateway's remanufactured M520CS notebook PC packs a fair number of features into a convenient package. The laptop looks a bit unusual, as its 15-inch display is housed in a frame designed to hold a widescreen monitor--the typical display size of M520 series PCs. Gateway opted instead to install a standard screen with a 1024 x 768 resolution to make the unit more affordable. Internally, the computer is equipped with a high-powered 2.53 GHz Intel Celeron D processor with 256 MB of DDR memory. The processor is powerful enough for most applications, but users will need to upgrade the memory if they want to run several programs at once.
Document and multimedia storage isn't vast but is more than adequate thanks to the 30 GB hard drive. Meanwhile, the 24x CD-RW/DVD combo optical drive lets users burn data, digital photos, and music onto CDs or watch DVDs on road trips. The computer also comes with an Intel Extreme 2 integrated graphics card and 32 MB of video memory, which handles most 2-D applications but isn't designed for more graphics-intensive 3-D software and video games.
Much of the M520CS's appeal (in addition to its affordable price tag) is its expansion options, which are extensive for a laptop. With four USB 2.0 ports and a FireWire port--one of the few notebooks so equipped--the M520CS can connect to several peripherals at once for high-speed data transfer.
