Editorial Review:
A fun, practical way to stay in contact during long hikes or ski trips, this pair of Motorola two-way radios keeps you connected from up to eight miles away (based on terrain and conditions). The wide-ranging signal also lets you keep tabs on the kids while at a theme park or playground, or give your down-river pal a quick head's up on where the fish are biting. Each radio comes equipped with 22 channels--including eight GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service), seven FRS (Family Radio Service), and seven GMRS/FRS combo channels--giving users plenty of frequencies on which to communicate. To ensure that your conversation is always between you and your mates, Motorola also included 121 privacy codes, which, when added to the 22 channels, gives you 2,662 options for exclusivity. The Priority Scan function lends a hand by searching for the most private channels in crowded environments, as does the Quiet Talk feature, which filters the signals from other radios to ensure an interruption-free conversation.
Users will also delight in the iVox voice-activation function, which turns your two-way radio into a speakerphone for hands-free communication. Perfect for road trips, the iVox lets you communicate instantly and with multiple parties. Next time you're driving in a five-car convoy, simply contact the other drivers on the radio and arrange a food or restroom pit stop. Because of the eight-mile range, you can be driving right next to the other cars or well ahead of them without losing contact.
All Motorola two-way radios are also designed with compatibility in mind, and the FV500Rs are no exception. The radios can communicate with other Talkabout models when set to the same channel/code sequence, or with competitors' products provided the channel and code sequences are compatible. Additional features include 10 distinct call tones, so your group can identify who's calling at a given time; a talk confirmation tone that lets others know when you've finished talking; a 16-level digital volume; an audible low battery alert and battery meter; and a keypad lock.
The FV500R radios include NiMH battery packs for each radio, which provide approximately 11 hours of two-way talk time per charge. Also in the pack is a single two-slot charger, which not only revitalizes your radios but also stores them in a single convenient location. Each radio measures 2.3 by 6.7 by 1.3 inches (W x H x D) and weighs 3.8 ounces without the batteries installed.
Note:
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) requires that operators on General Mobile Service (GMRS) and Private Land Mobile (PLM) frequencies obtain an FCC license prior to use. To learn more, please visit the FCC web site.
What's in the Box
Two FV500R two-way radios, 2-pocket desktop charger, two NiMH battery packs, two replaceable faceplates, user's manual.
Hands-free communication - Got your hands full? Dont panic. The iVOX communication feature acts like a speakerphone so you can talk hands-free. Perfect for road-trips, the iVOX lets you communicate instantly and with multiple parties while you are driving in a convoy. And with a range of up to 8 miles1 you dont even need to be near one another to receive directions or to find out where you are meeting up for the next pit-stop. Functional, handy design The FV500 is designed with great looks, as well as solid, functional, weather-resistant operations. With easy-to use controls, which are robust enough to be handled with gloves on, this two-way makes a great ski-team radio. No more getting separated from your friends as you go for that last run and are left without coverage. The Talkabout FV500R uses both FRS and GMRS frequencies providing more channels. This two-way radio requires an FCC license, as do all GMRS two-way radios.

Rating: out of 5 stars - More than the quoted "weather resistant"
We bought for spousal communication when husband is working elsewhere on the property. Works great for that purpose and charges faster than advertised. My husband came in for the day not realizing until the following day that he had lost the radio. Searched for days with no luck. Three weeks later (and many rains later) he almost twisted his ankle on it in the woods. The display was full of moisture and the faceplate muddy. Rinsed it off and put the hairdryer to it, back onto the charger and ... Read More

Rating: out of 5 stars - Great for the price
We didn't stress test these radios, but they've worked perfectly for around the house, from car to car on a road trip, and for short distances along the beach.

Rating: out of 5 stars - Great fun and very useful
Loads of fun with the kids, easy to use, even with my 6 year old.

I get 3/4 mile range in the clear (in town).

Best feature is the recharger!!! No more batteries to buy...

Rating: out of 5 stars - Great Value
I bought these for a trip to whistler. My buddy alrady had a couple of older motorola units that were compatible with the fv500's. Overall, battery performance was acceptable and lasted more than a full day of use at top volume. Range was pretty impressive, but no where near advertised specs when there were buildings or mountainous terrain as obstacles. Works as expected and a great value for about $20-$30.

Rating: out of 5 stars - Excellent Product!!
I have been a firm believer in Motorola radios and cellphones. These radios work great! They have batteries with no memory and charger, which is the way to go. The range is good with some interference, which you would have with any of these radios. I have found uses for these radios that I would have never thought of.
