Editorial Review: Call it fate, call it intuition, or just call it common sense, but somehow young Alanna knows she isn't meant to become some proper lady cloistered in a convent. Instead, she wants to be a great warrior maiden--a female knight. But in the land of Tortall, women aren't allowed to train as warriors. So Alanna finds a way to switch places with her twin, Thom, and take his place as a knight in training at the palace of King Roald. Disguising herself as a boy, Alanna begins her training as a page in the royal court. Soon, she is garnering the admiration of all around her, including the crown prince, with her strong work ethic and her thirst for knowledge. But all the while, she is haunted by the recurring vision of a black stone city that emanates evil... somehow she knows it is her fate to purge that place of its wickedness. But how will she find it? And can she fulfill her destiny while keeping her gender a secret? With Alanna: The First Adventure, veteran fantasy author Tamora Pierce has created a lively, engaging heroine who will charm middle-school readers with her tomboyish bravado and have them eagerly searching for the next book in the Song of the Lioness series. Like Brian Jacques's tales of Redwall, this popular quartet is an entertaining fantasy series for younger teens. (Ages 10 to 13) --Jennifer Hubert
"From now on I'm Alan of Trebond, the younger twin. I'll be a knight." In a time when girls are forbidden to be warriors, Alanna of Trebond wants nothing more than to be knight of the realm of Tortall. So she finds a way to switch places with her brother, Thom. Disguised as a boy, Alanna begins her training as a page at the palace of King Roald. The road to knighthood, as she discovers, is not an easy one. Alanna must master weapons, combat, magic -- and also polite behavior, her temper, and even her own heart. With stubbornness, skill, and daring, she wins the admiration of all around her, and the friendship of Prince Jonathan of Tortall himself. But she also makes an enemy of the prince's uncle, the powerful and charming Duke Roger.... Filled with swords and sorcery, adventure and intrigue, good and evil, Alanna's first adventure begins -- one that will lead to the fulfillment of her dreams and the magical destiny that will make her a legend in her land.

Rating: - Read over and over and over...
My Mom bought me the series 10 years ago when I was 13... Since then I have read them over and over and over... I find them impossible to tire of and once I start reading I don't want to put it back down... although by now I have half the books memorized.
I started reading these books when I was 13 years old and loved them... now at 23 years old- I still love to read this series.
The Immortals series is excellent as well.

This is one of the first Tamora Pierce books I have ever read, and one of the best. It shows how women are just as equal as men, and that we should always try to reach our goals, no matter how hard it can be.
I really recommend it to young girls and boys, since among other things it is a great fantasy book.

My Review for The First Adventure.
Allana always wanted to be a knight. In The First Adventure, the 1st in The Song of the Lioness series by Tamora Pierce, she started her journey to knighthood, just not as she thought it would happen. This is a story of friendship, loyalty, & going that extra mile to achieve the impossible. I enjoyed the first adventure very much. It is well thought out & easy to follow. I invite YOU to enjoy it also.

YES! A book with rulers. No, not the rectangle shaped school supply that help you measure. The ruler lets to much freedom. Where area the peasants?! Anyways, a girl wouldn't be confident on disguising herself into a boy!! No one has done it at her time so I wouldn't be to sure if I were her. If I was the king, I would just order Alanna's execution because I'm not that stupid! I can tell if she's a boy or not by listening to the voice and maybe check the crotch...
Rating: - I love this book
First, let me say that Tamora Pierce is a very talented writer. But, like all writers, she has made very good acomplishments in her career as an author, and has made very bad publishments where, let me say, the bomb is dropped!
But, luckily, this is not the case for Alanna: The First Adventure. This books just makes readers enter the world of Alanna, a young girl born into this world wanting to become a knight, something that no other woman has undertaken before. So Alanna trades places with ... Read More
