Editorial Review: The Compaq Presario Notebook 2100 series offers advantages customers need for work, school or home use with a high level of performance for productivity or digital entertainment use. Sporting a sleek design in two-tone graphite and silver, the Compaq Presario 2100 is an attractive and mobile lightweight notebook.
Designed to appeal to users who can't afford or don't require cutting-edge components but need a reasonably capable machine, Compaq's Presario 2100US series of notebooks features budget-conscious processors such as AMD's Athlon and Intel's Celeron. This model, the Presario 2190US Notebook PC, lacks popular modern amenities such as DVD burning and wireless communication yet will efficiently run common mid-level home, home office and leisure applications. Driving the Presario 2190us Notebook is a 2.4 GHz Intel Celeron processor. While not a super-speedy Pentium or a super-efficient Pentium M, a Celeron running at this speed is nevertheless an effective processor. Compaq has added 256 MB RAM memory (upgradeable to 1024 MB -- a good idea if you plan to multitask or run complex applications) and an ATI Mobility Radeon 4X AGP graphics chipset with 64 MB shared (not dedicated) memory. Sharing the data storage duties is an adequate 40 GB hard disk and a DVD/CD-RW combo drive through which you can burn and play audio CDs, archive data and watch your favorite movies. At 12.96 by 10.72 by 1.79 inches and 7.5 pounds, the Presario 2190US Notebook is of average size, midway between a desktop replacement and an ultralight. The unit is equipped with a large XGA TFT 15-inch display screen capable of crystal clear 1024 by 768 resolution. Other features include two conventional USB 1.1 ports for plug and play peripheral connections, an 88-key keyboard, a Touch Pad with on/off and dedicated up/down scroll surface, and a pair of internal stereo speakers. Communication options include a 56K modem for low-speed dial-up Internet and email access and a high-speed RJ-45 LAN network connector. High-speed USB 2.0 and FireWire ports are not included.

Rating: - Better then a Dell
For a cheap good laptop, I enjoy the Presario 2190US. The only issues I have, is that the has drive died, upgraded memory and a bigger hard drive and no issues. I use this machine for all sorts of uses from monitoring my networks, to web design and watching DVD's and playing games.
only draw back is only supports up to 1Gb of ram(512x2) which is also shared by the video card.
Also Technical support is not the best. Out of coutry and if calling in, can't understand reps, and they ... Read More

Problems:
1. Combo CDRW/DVD drive at first had difficulty recognizing music cds and eventually refused to recognize them altogether. It deteriorated slowly, which was odd. Drive was replaced with a sony model (I forget the original brand, but it wasn't anything I had heard of) which hasn't given any problems since.
2. Clock setting problems which I thought were malware related but turned out to be bios related. Updated the bios and everything was fine.
3. The tech support, a ... Read More
Rating: - Post warranty death
Just two weeks past the end of the warranty period, and the machine is dead. Guess I'll see whether it can be fixed, but I sure wouldn't buy another one.
Rating: - a disappointing product
I bought this laptop on Christmas and it turned out to be an unpleasant Christmas gift for myself. The hard drive died all of a sudden after two months. Although Compaq replaced the hard drive for me eventually, I had to pay myself for rescuing my two weeks' work. The repaired laptop I got back from Compaq works poorly and I have encountered a lot of unexpected problems when running programs. In addition, the keyboard of the laptop is not reacing very well and the noise of the laptop is tremedous. These ... Read More
Rating: - Caution
I bought a factory refurbished unit from J&R via Amazon. Product turned up okay and appeared to be brand new. Unfortunately the computer continually crashed from the first time I used it. As soon as I tried to use the burner or the associated supplied software it dumped and rebooted. I used the supplied installation discs and reformatted in case there was a problem but this did not cure the continual crashing. So I did what it said in the product manual and contacted Compaq's help line. And as per pretty ... Read More
