Editorial Review: The Palm Zire handheld is designed from the ground up for everyday personal use. On the move, at school or at work, it makes the dream of paperless life a reality. Feel like you don't have enough time to catch up with everything? The chances are you're not in control of your schedule. Unlike a paper organizer, the Zire handheld gives you the whole picture: appointments and people, tasks and notes, and ties them all together. Nothing could be more natural than entering information into the Zire handheld. Unlike a PC, which forces you to use a keyboard, or a mobile phone, which demands dexterous thumbs, the Zire handheld is much more civilized. If you know how to write in capital letters, you know how to use the Zire handheld. In just a few minutes, you will have mastered Graffiti, Palm's unique - and very intuitive - handwriting language. How easy is it? Well, like A-B-C. What's more, what would happen if you lost your paper agenda? With a Zire handheld, you can keep a copy of all your information on your PC.
Small, light, and compact, the Palm Zire handheld is a great PDA for anyone looking for a basic electronic personal information manager to help organize their tasks, meetings, and contacts. Getting started with the Zire is simple, making it ideal for people who are new to the world of handheld devices. | Organization in your Palm | We were up and running within 20 minutes of opening the package. As part of our setup, we synced the Zire with Microsoft Outlook. Initially, we had to try twice before we could successfully sync our data, but have been able to sync data flawlessly ever since. All of our contacts and scheduled meetings transferred effortlessly, and we quickly came to depend on the Zire to tell us where and when we had to be at a given time. However, with only a 2 MB storage capability, this handheld won't hold a huge about of data. The Zire is attractively colored with a white front and a silvery gray back, but Palm really cut corners with the screen cover. The cover is made of a flexible plastic that flaps around when it is supposed to be centered on the screen, and is awkward to keep out of the way when you want to access the screen. It's so annoying we recommend not using it at all. Fortunately, the screen cover comes separate from the Zire itself so this is easy to do. While not a powerful handheld, the Zire is worth considering if you're looking for a way to keep your tasks, contacts, and meetings organized. It performs those tasks wonderfully, and is priced affordably. --Patricia Atherly Pros: - Mac and PC compatible
- Inexpensive and attractive
- Easy to set up and use
- Comes with a rechargeable battery
Cons: - Only a 2 MB memory
- No expansion slots
- Palm OS 4.1 instead of the new Palm OS 5
- No backlight
- Flimsy screen cover
Easy to learn and use, the Palm Zire handheld offers you great value at an affordable price. It's compact enough to slip into a pocket and keeps all of your important information--addresses, appointments, notes, and more--at your fingertips, whether you're at work, at school, or at home. Enter information right on its screen with Graffiti software, Palm's alphabet, or easily transfer information from your PC or Mac. With a rechargeable battery for hassle-free operation and a handy flip-cover to protect the screen while you're on the go, the Zire handheld is a practical and reliable way to keep your busy life in balance. Rating: - Palm Zire Handheld
The Palm would not hold battery power. Unable to use unless it was plugged in to an outlet. It was returned for a credit.
Rating: - Excellent Purchase, I got exactly what I expected
This product was exactly what the vendor said it would be. I received all the components as advertised. Excellent product and I'm very happy with it thus far.
Rating: - Ok for a beginner, but lacks in advanced functions
Pros-
1.) Works good for someone who only needs basic functions such as date book, expense, etc.
2.) Compatible with Mac and PC, also can connect to other Palm Pilots via infrared transfer.
Cons-
1.) Black and white screen.
2.) Only 2 MB of memory. This is ok if you only use the basic functions of the unit, but if you install other applications it tends to start bogging it down.
3.) Unreliable battery. The battery lasted quite a while when I first got the ... Read More
Rating: - most reliable and battery efficient palm I've ever used
I have had a zire (bought it open-box off of [...]) for about 2 years and it has performed admirably. While this palm has some very well-known limitations, it has (and is still doing) everything I need it to.
pros:
-amazing battery life (never drained it past 1/2 full, even after weeks of (admittedly light) usage.
-extremely durable. I work at Staples and this thing goes through thick and thin with me while I bang it around during my 8-hour day. While it has plenty of scratches, ... Read More
Rating: - Unreliable
I need a palm to have my calander and address book on hand at all times. This model proved to be extremely inefficient. The lack of backlighting meant that often I could not see what was on the screen and it's memory would empty from one moment to the next. I would be stuck with no calander or address book. I contacted the company by email and the only advice they had was to keep the Palm seperate from my cell phone. This I did, to no avail, the Palm continues to discharge it's memory.
I have now ... Read More
