It's always refreshing to find a kids' album that doesn't seem uniquely designed to drive adults crazy. As you pop in this CD and putter, you might not even notice that its bouncy, folksy, Squeeze-meets-John Prine-meets-Lovin' Spoonful music is for kids, until you hear phrases like "belly button," "dinosaur," "mud puddle"--and the familiar strains of "The Muffin Man." Happy Lemons is Chicago-based artist Ralph Covert's third children's music release, after the popular Ralph's World and At the Bottom of the Sea. As ever, Covert writes (and sings) most of the songs on Happy Lemons, from "Sammy the Dog" to "Dinosaur Rumble," though familiar songs like "Pony Boy" (arranged by Bruce Springsteen) and Burt Bacharach and Hal David's "What's New, Pussycat?" also make appearances. This effervescent CD manages to offer up blues, folk, pop, and jazz elements without a hiccup. A particular favorite is the silly but harmonious "Betty Botter," which tinkers with the traditional tongue-twister about making bitter batter better to great effect. Special guests on the album include blues artist Corky Siegel, rock drummer Matt Walker, and an exuberant chorus of kids. Children's book illustrator Giselle Potter (Gabriella's Song, Kate and the Beanstalk) designed the whimsical cover for this CD, giving form to the trombone-playing dog Sammy, Pony Boy, and many, many happy lemons. Whoever thinks that "fun for the whole family" isn't possible hasn't explored Ralph's World. --Karin Snelson

Rating: out of 5 stars - A Gift to Children (and Adults too)
(Warning, this review is a template for all my Ralph's World reviews, but strewn throughout are specific comments pertaing to this specific album)

Ralph's World is music performed by an adult, but in the voice of a child. Of course, this is the goal for all children's artists, but sadly, much of what is on the market is simplistic and condescending. Ralph's World is childlike through and through. His music looks at the world from a child's perspective, and delivers in songs both children ... Read More

Rating: out of 5 stars - Happy Lemons rules
My son received this CD for his 1st birthday. He loves it so much I bought two more Ralph's World CD's! When he gets upset in the car I turn on his CD and he is happy and dancing. My 11 year old even has her favorites.

Rating: out of 5 stars - Great for my kids and doesn't drive me nuts
Catchy, cheery toons that keep your kids bouncing, dancing and entertained -- even after hearing it 50+ times.

Never thought I'd say this about a kids CD, but as an adult even I find the songs catchy and entertaining. OK, now that my kids have made me hear this CD at least 100 times -- seriously! -- I don't enjoy it as much as I used to, but Happy Lemons is still my favorite kids CD.

Rating: out of 5 stars - Equally loved by kids & adults
I recently heard this album -- over and over and over! -- while visiting my twin toddler nephews. Even after the songs were permently embedded in my brain, I still love this album. It's musically rich, it's witty, it's sweet and catchy. I highly recommend it!

Rating: out of 5 stars - The whole family loves it
Another great effort from our hometown favorite Ralph's World. We love the opening track because our one year old and can sing along with the la la las. Sammy the Dog is hilarious and Pony Boy is just beautiful. Way to go, Ralph's World. Car rides are bearable now!
