The king is dead long live the king but who will it be? the answer is found on the battlefields and in the mystical and powerful manipulations of fate emanating from the women of the legendary isle of avalon in this intrigue-filled retelling of the king arthur/camelot legend. Studio: Turner Hm Entertainm Release Date: 09/07/2004 Starring: Anjelica Huston Joan Allen Run time: 180 minutes Rating: Nr
This adaptation of Marion Zimmer Bradley's sprawling and perennially popular book, whose retelling of the Arthurian legends focused on the role of powerful females, compresses a wealth of mysticism, family intrigue, and bloody swordplay into three hours. While the plot can meander slowly and can sometimes seem, well, mystifying, the work of three notable actresses holds the production together, and the numerous complications do eventually get resolved. As Viviane, the Lady of the Lake, Anjelica Huston endeavors to perpetuate the old religion as pagan Britain comes into contact with Christianity. The scheming Morgause, played to evil perfection by Joan Allen, conspires to her own ends. And Avalon priestess Morgaine, played by Julianna Margulies, travels the heroine's journey, overcoming tragedies, injustice, and all manner of obstacles in her duty to both "the goddess" and her younger brother, King Arthur. Although the action lags at times, the production is quite lavish for a made-for-television feature and the film is ultimately entertaining. --Robert J. McNamara

Rating: out of 5 stars - Don't waste you mone and time! Get the Book, it's more conscise, and worth the time and money, you'd spend with this product!
As an avid fan of the original MZB masterpiece, I was truly saddened, disgusted, and furious, at what these Hacks (the Writer's, Producers, Editors, Costume Designers [were totally anacronistic in what thy came up with, btw], and Studio Execs.) did to such an excellent work.

I mean really! Just where do they get off by totally changing almost everythin that was/is contained in the book, into what was/is presented??? I'd sure like to know.

Although, I do applaud all the actors ... Read More

Rating: out of 5 stars - Good movie
Good cast. Could have stayed closer to the book, but all-in-all a good way to spend your time.

Rating: out of 5 stars - Legend
I have always loved the Arthurian legend, this is just another twist. A movie well worth watching, but send the kids to bed.

Rating: out of 5 stars - a big disappointment after the great book, but OK on its own
To be honest, I did not think that 3 hours could encompass the incredible depth and complexity of Bradley's masterwork. But I got this out of curiosity and because my kids would probably enjoy it. I am sorry to report that this film barely sufficed to hold my interest - I constantly thought back with disappointment to the book I read (and vividly remember from) nearly 20 years ago, which had phenomenal character development and covered every aspect the Arthur myth from a new point of view. Nonetheless, ... Read More

Rating: out of 5 stars - a half good movie
The first half of the movie was great and followed the book pretty well. Unfortunately I realized that it had only covered about the first quarter of the book. Ted Turner obviously decided to solve the problem by completely changing the ending and thus the entire tone of the movie. If Bradley were alive I'm sure she'd be very disappointed in what was done to her book. The actors were not at fault and did a credible job but the writers should be hung. This should have been at least an eight to twelve part mini ... Read More
