After Friday the 13th, Part V - A New Beginning, this once-proud franchise was in dire need of an even newer beginning, and writer/director Tom McLoughlin really came through, basically, as far as I'm concerned, saving the series. Not only do we get the real Jason back, he's bigger and badder than ever. We also return to Camp Crystal Lake (now renamed Forest Green in a rather transparent attempt to excise the whole Jason "legend" from the area), where we not only have camp counselors but - for ... This time we have Jason brought back from the dead and ressurected by his old nemesis. Tommy Jarvis (Thom Mathews from Return of the Living Dead) is still haunted by his run in with Jason as a child. This movie disregards part 5. Tommy is not the crazy guy he was in the fifth movie. But instead Tommy is a rational, somewhat posessed individual this time. He is a man on a mission. He wants to make sure Jason is dead for good.

Friday the 13th part VI was part II of Sid the Elf's Columbus Day B extravaganza if that makes any sense. We followed the awful Leprechaun in the Hood with this classic horror film. This issue of the ongoing Friday the 13th series is generally considered one of the, if not the best film. Due to the undeniable commercial success of these films, the series continues past roughly 55 "that has to be it, they can't possibly do another sequel" moments. While we aren't huge fans of some of the lesser films in ... Read More

In "The Final Chapter," Tommy Jarvis "kills" Jason with a machete. Now two films later, Tommy tries to put his haunted past behind him by digging up Jason to make sure he's dead. In the process, a bolt of lightning strikes Jason's long-dead corpse and reanimates him. Doh!
From the premise, it's clear that "Jason Lives" isn't taking itself too seriously, and that the franchise has taken a badly needed tonal detour. (This is a full decade before "Scream" performed the full overhaul on the ... Read More
