Featured Listmania! Editorial Review:
Meticulously detailed trains and buildings might make Railroad Tycoon 2 Gold look like a simulation aimed at model railroad aficionados, but don't be fooled. The real heart of the game is its detailed business simulation of 19th and 20th century railroad empires. At the beginning of a scenario or campaign you form a railroad company, and it then becomes your job to meet the expectations of your shareholders by supplying the goods and services demanded by the game's cities and industries.
It isn't easy. Those pretty trains chugging across the bucolic landscape have to be maintained, repaired, and replaced regularly or you run the risk of experiencing an expensive breakdown or crash. As the years tick by you must also adapt to historical demands. New industries spring up while others become less important. The passenger and mail routes that generate so much cash at the beginning of the game don't even cover your expenses once the automobile steals the show. The availability of new trains (the game models over 60), the fact that demands wax and wane over time, and the inclusion of a fully functioning stock market simulation that allows for hostile takeovers add up to a game where players always have something to do.
This Gold version of the game includes both the original Railroad Tycoon 2 and the expansion pack Railroad Tycoon 2: The Second Century along with 12 bonus scenarios and an electronic version of the strategy guide. It's enough to keep fans of business simulations and strategy games occupied for months. --T. Byrl Baker
Pros:
  • Accurate yet fun business elements
  • Always something to do
  • Nice graphics and a terrific blues soundtrack
Cons:
  • Micromanaging cargoes may be too tedious for casual gamers

Railroad Tycoon II captures the authentic look and feel of the fabled late-1800s railways and focuses on industries such as coal, steel, and textiles. Railroad Tycoon II has over 34 types of cargo and 50 train engines, and also features a sophisticated economic system and simulated stock market.
Railroad Tycoon II: The Second Century focuses on the postindustrial years of the 1930s through 2030. In The Second Century, gamers encounter world catastrophes such as World War II, the cold war, and global warming, and must solve modern problems, such as the increasing demand for mass transportation in major cities.

Rating: out of 5 stars - locks up & crashes frequently
I've installed this games on two different Linux machines I've got, one running Red Hat 6.0 and the other running SuSE 7.1, and on both of them I've had severe reliability problems with the game. Nearly every time I've started the game program up it has malfunctioned in some manner. I don't know if this game is really any fun or not because I don't feel like I've been able to play it at all. For me, this has been a complete waste of money. If I can get their support to give me a clue about how ... Read More

Rating: out of 5 stars - Great game Great game etc.
This game was a great game, it has the new and the old engines. The game has a bunch of realistic things in it. Such as the stock market, people robbing the trains. Trains without oil nor water will go very slow. There are speific goals that you need to acheive at certain levels. The only thing that it doesn't have is taxes. Just like the cities, they demand things. You can probably make a lot of money just by shipping passengers and mail. if you want to make a ton of money, shipped what they demand ... Read More
