I could almost do everything I wanted by just trasferring cab files for program installation, and other data files via a USB memory stick or CF memory card between my laptop and the Jornada 820. However, using Windows CE services to convert my Word and Excel documents between the full and pocket versions manually (which ActiveSync usually does for you automatically) was getting old.
