Brian Setzer has spent much of his career revving up already hot retro styles to a booming pitch. While this generally worked in his early years with the rockabilly Stray Cats, it largely fails with his swing orchestra. Louis Prima--whose "Jump Jive an' Wail" is faithfully remade here--wasn't exactly the king of subtlety himself, but even he might have covered his ears at the blare produced by the combination of Setzer's (admittedly sharp) guitar playing and a too-bright horn section. A couple of The Dirty Boogie's cuts are cute ("You're the Boss," an Elvis Presley/Ann-Margret duet, is recast for Setzer and No Doubt frontwoman Gwen Stefani), but fans of the Cherry Poppin' Daddies and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy might think twice. --Rickey Wright

I bought this CD to replace the cassette version I already owned years ago. Even my 12 yo son like this one. It is very upbeat and easy to listen to. Some people find Setzer's guitar heavy handed but frankly I do not as a rule like the "big band, swing style". This is a bit different and most people that have heard it have liked it!

"Sleepwalk" and "Jump Jive An' Wail" will cater to nostalgic hipsters...but my faves are "This Old House" and the suave "Hollywood Nocturne."
Amazon.com Critic Rickey Wright's 'review' seems a more brief dismissal of Brian Setzer's rockabilly/swing style, than a focused comment on the band's 1998 song collection "The Dirty Boogie."

This is another one of my favorite CDs of all time. It features a rockin' big band with a band leader who plays smokin' hot rockabilly guitar on a big, fat Gretsch, and sings with an energy to match his stellar playing. It doesn't get any better than that! Great guitar playing combined with killer arrangements and great singing. I love this album. I don't get tired of this album. I just keep playing it over and over year after year. It's a cool, fun ride with great all around musicianship.
I don't think I could pick a favorite song...they are all too hooky (be it vocally or musically) to choose among them.

"Jump Jive An' Wail" is the first song I ever heard of the Brian Setzer Orchestra, but it's not the only worthy song on the album. The Brian Setzer Orchestra fits right in with Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and Cherry Poppin' Daddies, but BETTER, and with a bit more rocking out! If you're looking for the best example of the 1990s throwback to swing, please, I beg you, look here, and you will be more than satisfied.
