Emotionally over-the-top pop extravaganzas like the string-swelling "Tonight Tonight," the Metallica-influenced alternative rock of "Zero," the techno via new wave of "1979"--the 28 songs on this swell two-disc album are as eclectic as their themes are epic and ambitious. Billy Corgan's thin whine isn't much of an instrument, but he makes the most of it by writing smart songs that take emotional chances that more-typical alt rockers would deem uncool. Pessimistic and feeling trapped but still wanting to believe in love, in a future, in something--this is the sound of Gen X at the millennium, with all the self-indulgence and power that would suggest. --David Cantwell

Rating: - Solid Rock Album
Solid Rock album my dad loves it for his brithday. He told me every track rocks and nothing short of a mind blowing perfect album by a solid rock band. His view and mine this was the bands best album.
Rating: - "Speak to me in a language I can hear..."
Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness is the Smashing Pumpkins most complicated and prettiest album. This epic contains two discs so expect a lot of different styles of music, you get a little bit of everything, beautiful ballads with haunting melodies, the alternative rock anthems, and Corgan's quirky unique songs. How can you go wrong with songs like: Thirty-three, Tonight, Tonight, 1979, Bullet with Butterfly Wings, Lily (My One and Only Love), Where Boys Fear to Tread and etc. Important album ... Read More
Rating: - One of my favorites
1979, Thirty-Three, and Tonight Tonight are three more of my all time favorite songs. Dam do I love this band.
Rating: - Feast of the 90s
Can't say I'm a huge fan of the "fuzzy" guitars they use on the heavier tracks - to me, it kind of spoils the power of those tracks. At least it's original. But by hell this band can knock out a ballad like no one else. No wonder they're a flagship 90s band ... no one's making music these days like they did back then (unfortunately this includes the Pumpkins, by all accounts ...) Nonetheless, good stuff.
Rating: - Into the night...
Mellon Collie is a beautifully written masterpiece in my opinion. Of course, I simply adore the pumpkins. I find the album itself can satisfy a vast array a different music "moods" and left me with a number of songs I could identify with at that specific time in my life. For those who say it doesn't compare to Siamese Dream: While I admit Siamese Dream was a masterpiece, I see no decline with mellon collie-just difference. It was still the beautiful pumpkins music I knew I loved (which is more ... Read More
