Gold Mountain has a unique and distinctive Canadian flavour which embraces the cultural diversity found in Canada today. It is the story of two women, not only on opposite ends of our cultural scale but also on opposite ends of our Justice scale. It is the story of Kelly, the daughter of the concubine of a Chinese immigrant to Canada, and her struggle to find her place in both the Caucasian and Chinese world, both of which prefer their women heterosexual. It is the story of Jane, a woman who appears to have found her place in the world, but in fact her place is waiting to be discovered. Discovering for Jane and a place for Kelly comes as a result of the night that Kelly's half-brother, her father's only son, an indulged young man, is murdered. The author is skilled at writing both Kelly and Jane's voices and the impact is considerable. Easily, the reader is led from one POV to the other solely by how the voices are written.

Rating: out of 5 stars - Gold Mountain by Anne Azel
An excellent read. Most of what is available out there with lesbian main characters could be classified as 'pulp fiction' or 'fan fiction' or at least formulaic. Gold Mountain is refreshingly not any of the above.

Rating: out of 5 stars - Definitely Not Formula
`Gold Mountain' is a quick read told in first person, alternately providing the perspective of the two main protagonists. The story brings together two women from very different backgrounds - one Canadian and the other first generation Asian-Canadian - in the early 20th Century.

The first woman is attorney Kelli Li whose mother is the mistress of her father. Kelli is the second daughter; the first was born to her father's wife. Everyone lives together in her father's home. He has ... Read More

Asian culture gave birth to a concept called minimalism. The idea is to create a picture or image by providing as little information as possible and then letting the viewer or reader's imagination fill in the gaps; thereby creating a more complete picture than was actually presented. Perhaps this is what Anne Azel was trying to do when she wrote Gold Mountain. It presents challenges for people who are not used to that type of reading.

Kelly Li is a second generation Chinese woman living ... Read More

Rating: out of 5 stars - Review of "Gold Mountain" by Cheri
A tantalizing blend of Chinese Canadian flavors is the best description of Kelly Li's world in Anne Azel's, "Gold Mountain." Azel writes from the heart, and her soul pours out, eloquently and intimately, onto each page. Reading about other cultures is like taking a vacation without the need to leave home. Azel, a gifted author, clearly understands the intricacies of traditional Chinese values and employs that depth of comprehension to enrich this adventure for her readers. Equally as compelling as Kelly's ... Read More
