Editorial Review: The "respectable" world of an Eastern woman in the late 1800's, marrying and caring for a family, holds no appeal for Jennifer Kensington. She seeks a life of adventure and challenge. When her request to work in the family business is refused by her father, she leaves for the West, where she is certain she will find a new life in a society where a woman's options are not so restricted. Jesse Branson has built a good life for herself in Sweetwater, Montana. Skill in a poker game made her the owner of The Silver Slipper, a one time bordello, now a successful restaurant and rooming house. The profits from that business made it possible for her to achieve her biggest dream, to own her own ranch. Jesse is a respected member of the community, but someone is plotting to destroy all of her dreams as well as take her life. Jennifer and Jesse's attraction for each other grows as intrigue swirls around them. Will their chance for happiness survive as the danger to Jesse unfolds? As they struggle to save Jesse's life, they also try to save their future.

Rating: - The West as I wish it could have been
I've lost count of how many times I've read this book - the last time being just a week ago as I flew home from a holiday in Montana - one of the special parts of my trip was visiting some of the places that feature in this book.
Now that I've seen where the action takes place the book is even more alive for me.
A great read.
Rating: - Couldn't put it down
I read this book in less than two days. There is Jesse a sort of drifter who wins a business in Sweetwater Montana. Where she makes a home, a respectable business and her dream of a ranch. There is Jennifer the daughter of successful shipping mogel. Her father sees her as a way to make his business more sucessful. Jennifer has her own dreams and dares to stike out on her own and make them real.
By the fates they meet. Things happen quickly. There is some danger for the two. And more ... Read More
Rating: - just plain bad
My Dad reads westerns and I've often sat down with one and had a blast going back in time, and I always wished someone would write a really great one with lesbian characters. So I bought this book and worked hard to like it. The best I could do was like the idea of it. I found the story to be completely unbelievable, and as for the writing: it was immature and often just plain bad. The relationship between Jesse and Jennifer was not credible at all and so sickeningly sweet it made me put the book ... Read More
Rating: - Sadly Lacking
I very much wanted to like this story. I love Westerns. But this is not really a Western worth reading. Others have said the story is "sweet" and it is, sickly sacharrine sweet. Jesse and Jennifer could have in no way lived at the turn of the century like this in Montana. No way would the society have looked the other way. I could not even begin to suspend disbelief at the implausibleness of this story. It is also not told very well. The writing is juvenile and many parts are poorly phrased. This ... Read More
Rating: - A sweet tale
A very enjoyable story from a new author. Sweetwater wraps itself around you in the first few chapters and it's an light, enjoyable read to the very last page. Minner has written a delightful tale of innocence and first love, set in the old west.
