Editorial Review: It's called "whole brain thinking," the notion that if children are stimulated to use both sides of the brain--developing their abilities to think both logically and creatively--they will become more adept learners. Underscoring such research, the folks at Small Fry Productions (makers of Bilingual Baby) have produced Brainy Baby, which joins a host of worthy tapes designed to stimulate a baby's mind. This two-volume set is unique, however, in addressing specific left and right brain functions in distinct, 30-minute programs. "Left Brain," the second volume, picks up where volume one leaves off, engaging a child's analytical abilities. Bright visuals encourage growth in the areas of math, language, and logic. Patterns and shapes are introduced in colors of red, black, and white. Language is explored beginning with letters of the alphabet, followed by simple words and voice-overs offering the equivalent in Spanish and French. Numbers are presented in sequence using interactive questions (How many do you see?). Less clinical than the So Smart! approach, Brainy Baby provides enthusiastic narration and plenty of baby faces, familiar toys, and giggles. It also employs the so-called Mozart effect (the idea that classical music enhances a child's spatial intelligence), interspersing selections from baroque and classical era composers Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven. If parents are uncomfortable with the film's academic premise to "develop your child's analytical side for a smarter baby," they can be assured that, research aside, there is plenty of pure enjoyment here to delight a wee one, 6 to 36 months. And the melodies of the maestros make it palatable for parents too. --Lynn Gibson
Brainy Baby is a breakthrough in infant development videos. It is the first video series that can help develop both left and right brain thinking. The "logical" left-brain focuses on sequencing, stacking objects, letters and numbers, analysis, math, shapes, patterns and languages. The "creative" right brain focuses on intuition, nesting objects, creative thinking, color, patterns, spatial reasoning, art, rhymes and imagination. Children will be captivated as the colorful graphics, classical music and friendly voices stimulate their curiosity and reinforce a whole-brain approach to learning. Dr. Toy award winner. Recommended for ages 6 - 36 months.

Rating: - Good Starter Program
Simple yet stimulating. Just the right amount of information at once (objects, colors, shapes, alphabets ... etc.) for the young minds. If you are deciding between the "Einstein Series" and "Brainy Baby", get the "Brainy Baby".
Rating: - Fun for all species!
I don't have children, but in reviewing this tape for one of my college classes, I noticed that my 1-year-old Jack Russell Terrier was absolutely fascinated. He stared at the screen as the colorful shapes and letters flashed and swirled about. I turned down the volume and he looked at me, as if to say, "Where's the music?". I doubt that he'll learn his letters or start speaking French, but I've never seen him so interested in any other program!
Rating: - Very good for the first two years
Both of the Brainy Baby cassettes are excellent. Though my kid preferred the Left Brain one, I would recommend both to any parent. It really gets the attention of the little kids. If you have to choose one, start with the Left Brain, after that you will definitely be ordering the Right Brain too. By the age of 2, my son seems to be less interested in these cassettes and is looking for numbers/letters/speech, but every now and then I play the video and he still loves it.
Rating: - Quit Whining - These tapes are GREAT!
I've just read a couple of the negative parent reviews of this series, and all I have to say is, Quit whining! I've sick of parents with way too much time on their hands, overanalyzing the detail minutia (i.e., whether a computer graphic has a shadow or not...?!?!) If the CHILD likes and learns from the tape, isn't that all that matters? Videos that have the word "Baby" in the title are usually just that - for babies to enjoy, NOT to entertain the parents! My toddler enjoys these very ... Read More
Rating: - Not Quite a Winner
I admit I'm not too excited about this type of video, but with the high marks that this video received I was ready to jump in. Being the LEFT side of the brain I was expecting the video to uphold the laws of physics. Would it have cost more to allow hands to move the puzzle, stacking toys? This video contains shadows holding and moving stacking rings. And many items that just appear. While this is common for this type of video, I'd really like one duplicates reality and shows the physical action related ... Read More
