Editorial Review: This text was developed in the residency training program in the department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the JFK Johnson Rehab Institute, UMDNJ and the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. It is designed both for residents preparing for the board exams offered by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (ABPMR), for practicing physiatrists preparing for recertification, and for instructors in PM&R helping physicians to prepare for the boards. The topics are divided into major subspecialty areas and are authored by physicians with special interests and clinical expertise in their respective subjects. Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Board Review is necessary reading for all residents in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation as well as practicing physiatrists. The book concentrates on board-related concepts in the field of Rehabilitation Medicine. Residents will find the book essential in preparing for Part I and Part II of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Board Certification: - It is the only book to specifically focus on board-related material, providing a single source of current up-to-date PM&R, orthopaedic, neurologic, and general medical information.
- Board "pearls" are highlights with an icon in the margin. These "pearls" are aimed at stressing the cinical and board eligible aspects of the topics. This format was designed to simplify preparation for the board exam.
- The table of contents is modeled after the topic selection of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (AAPMR) Self-Directed Medical Knowledge Program used by residents nationwide to prepare to the Self-Assessment Examination (SAE). This will help all residents, PGY 2,3,4, in yearly preparation and carry-over from SAE preparation to Board Exam preparation.
- The topics are divided into major subspecialty areas, each authored by physicians with special interest and clinical expertise in their areas and reviewed again by senior specialists in PM&R who specialize in these topics.
Of Special Benefit to Readers:- Over 500 illustrations clarify concepts in the text.
- Key concepts are highlighted, making it simple to find and organize important information.
- The format is in outline form to increase accessibility.
- Information is well-organized and topic oriented.
In addition to the field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, many other medical specialties will have considerable interest in this book:- The Electrodiagnostic, Spinal Cord Injury, and Pediatric chapters are particularly helpful for physiatrists wishing to obtain specialty certification in these topics.
- Orthopaedists will have an interest in Prosthetics and Orthotics and musculoskeletal areas for their own board certification.
- Neurologists will have an increased interest especially in electrodiagnostics medicine, neuromuscular medicine, and also including stroke and traumatic brain injury.
- Internists and Family Practice Physicians will have great use for this text to give them an overview of PM&R and pertinent information in areas of cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation, and also rehabilitation in the areas of neurology, rheumatology and neuromuscular diseases.
- Rheumatologists will find information on prosthetics and orthotics, multiple sclerosis, and rheumatology and rheumatologic rehabilitation.

Rating: - Good board review book
This remains the best board review book for PM&R. It is too big to carry around with you, so you can only use it for home study. Choi's Pocketpedia is very good to keep in your pocket for quick reference. Cooper's Essential Physical Medicine has more information, is organized by the rotation you are doing (as opposed to disease topic) and also fits in your pocket. I prefer it for reading during a rotation. But, for board review, I recommend Cuccurullo. Some of the information is a little outdated, ... Read More
Rating: - The next best thing to Molnar' s text itself
I just used this book to study for and pass the pediatric rehab boards. It is an outstanding summary of Molnar's Pediatric Rehab text since the Cuccurrulo pediatric chapter summary is written by Molnar's co-author Alexander. The peds rehab chapter is required reading for my rehab residents on their pediatric rehab clerkship. It is nice to finally have some well-organized comprehensive review books out there.
Rating: - Well Worth Every Penny for PM&R Board Review!
I did not take the written exam in the typical manner secondary to childbearing and scheduling delays. Needless to say, my clinical exposure to many of the tested areas was limited since completion of residency. Consequently, I found it necessary to review and study prior to the exam. I found this book helpful in structuring my study time. It's subject contect was also complete. If there was an area in which the review book did not make since to me, I merely supplemented with standard tests. Otherwise, ... Read More
Rating: - Good for boards only
I found this book helpful studying for boards. It is a very large field to cover and the author stresses board relevant material with an "open book" icon next to them.
Unlike the previous reviewer, I don't think $150 is a bargain for a soft cover book. I would try to buy one used or get one from a graduated resident. Once you pass your boards you probably will never use this book.
I don't know what the previous reviewer means by a "real board review course" for orals. It would be better to have ... Read More
Rating: - DON'T BELIEVE THE NEGATIVE RATINGS
First of all, this book is only $150 which in the grand scheme is nothing. Second, it is a board review book, not a complete reference for the whole specialty. Some sections are better than others, but overall I found the information very high yield for the boards, especially the highlighted points - which are highlighted cause they're high yield for the boards! I PASSED USING THIS BOOK EXCLUSIVELY!! Realize that 90% of 1st takers pass this exam (Hey, I found that statistic in Cuccurullo) so for most this test ... Read More
