Professional ColdFusion 5.0 is a chunky and comprehensive guide to Macromedia's Web application server. This book is suitable both for existing ColdFusion professionals and for those evaluating this technology against rivals such as Active Server Pages, JavaServer Pages, and PHP.
ColdFusion is cross-platform, and it integrates well with both COM on Windows and Java on any supported operating system. It has strong development tools, including ColdFusion Studio and Dreamweaver UltraDev, and following its acquisition by Macromedia these are likely to get better still.
The authors kick off with a "Getting Started" section, which explains installation, basic features, and key tools such as the Application Manager and ColdFusion Studio. There is also a thorough explanation of CFML (ColdFusion Markup Language), the core tagging system. A section on database essentials covers a wide variety of database servers. The third section has chapters on state management, templates, error handling, scripting, and drawing charts. The topic of XML and Web services gets a section of its own, followed by coverage of ColdFusion extensions using COM, CORBA, Java, and custom tags. The later parts of the book go into the details of administration, such as scheduling tasks, logs and archives, clustering and load balancing, security, troubleshooting, and optimization. There is a brief case study based on an auction site.
Packed with tips and example code, this is an excellent ColdFusion resource. It is disappointing to find nothing on Dreamweaver UltraDev, whereas the general material here on cascading style sheets and Dynamic HTML can easily be found elsewhere. On the plus side, the chapters on administration are particularly valuable, and the authors do a good job of explaining ColdFusion from the ground up but at a professional level. --Tim Anderson, Amazon.co.uk
Macromedia ColdFusion is probably the most complete package of tools ever created for developing dynamic web applications. It runs on a number of operating systems, works with almost any web server, and integrates seamlessly with COM, CORBA and Java. The Enterprise edition comes with all the tools you need to create a robust, secure, and scalable web application, including full-text indexing, and clustering and load-balancing software. ColdFusion also has its own complete Integrated Development Environment, ColdFusion Studio, which provides just about all the features you can think of for creating, editing, and debugging ColdFusion templates. Perhaps most importantly, it's extremely easy to use.

Being a ColdFusion user group president, I give this book my seal of approval. This book is well written with easy to understand examples. It will help someone with no CF knowledge all the way to the experts. This book is well laid out and is enjoyable to read. I didn't know what to expect from Wrox on this. I have been a huge Ben Forta fan but this book is just as good as his (if not better)! If you want to learn CF, or just want to get better, buy this book. You will be very happy with it.

WROX books used to be the only ones I'd buy; after having a grand ol' time with the ASP and ASP Databases series. The Professional series has been a real disappointment (and waste of money!). The books tend to be more wordy than necessary and spend too much time on the obvious and too little on the abstract. Cold Fusion is a fairly straight-forward programming language. You only need this book if you wanna learn CF. I've found that even total begginers like me can read it. But it's written in a way that the authors are expecting the readers already another programming language. Like when they've talked about looping, they said that CF support For Next loop and didn't say anything other than that... Anywayz, it's a nice book.
Rating: - Very useful
This book was a great addition to my CF Web Application Construction Kit by Forta. I found that the book explained topics fairly well,but there was a lack of code examples. I'm the kind of person that needs to see the syntax.
Also, I looked for hours on how to perform a simple multiple update using checkboxes. This book barely acknowledged them and provided no examples on how to incorporate them into a form using CF. I realize, however, that my incident may be isolated.
