Editorial Review: Cassie Parker has grown used to denying her sexuality. Her father, the fire-and-brimstone Reverend Parker, has made that a neccessity. Raised in a web of secrets, sadness, and under the heavy hand of her father's righteous wrath and intolerance, Cassie turns to her art to fill the hole in her heart and erase the memory of a mother who abandoned her in childhood. Then Luke Winston enters her life. Strong, mysterious, and beautiful, Luke sparks Cassie's desire, and takes her heart to places she's never known. Soon Cassie can no longer deny her attraction to women--and especially to Luke. When Cassie's father makes an unexpected visit, the intrusion on her new life explodes as dark family secrests are revealed. Will Cassie choose a life without family...or a life without love?

Rating: - A fascinating character study
This book is a little different that the other Gerri Hill books I've read. The setting she uses isn't as vivid. There isn't some overarching plot or mystery or intrigue or even a vacation set aside as a certain amount of time with anticipated events like her other works. And yet, I found myself liking this book the best of all of her books. It may be true that she doesn't quite develop all of her characters as deeply as she does in some other books.
The portrait she paints of Cassie ... Read More
Rating: - Good and dependable
This was another good work from a dependable writer. It was not Gerri Hill's best (that goes to Hunter's Way). Reading the book was a very pleasant way to spend several hours with new friends.
Rating: - Conservative Issues
Gain fresh insight into the difficulties lesbians face when their family is conservative and religious with this roller coaster story.
Rating: - What a love story
Sometimes life is simple and sometimes it is not. This love story is good example of these facts. Had Ms. Hill gone into every detail about these two characters the book would read more like "War and Peace" (which many readers start but never finish)than a romance. By the end I was ready for Luke to design a house for me and I would love to have a few of Cassie's carvings sitting around the house. This story holds reality within (just because it isn't your reality doesn't mean that it could not reasonably ... Read More
Rating: - I just had to read it twice...
It's not often that I read a book twice, but I had to read this one again. WOW! What a phenomenal story.
Cassie, a wood sculptor, was raised in a very conservative household by a preacher. Hill never comes out and says what religion, but it screamed Southern Baptist. Her father put the fear of God in her regarding relationships with men and told her she'd be damned to Hell if she even thought of a relationship with a woman.
Cassie's best friend, Kim, is a lesbian. Kim tried ... Read More
