Editorial Review: Moving back through the 1940s, through air raids, blacked-out streets, illicit partying, and sexual adventure, to end with its beginning in 1941, The Night Watch tells the story of four Londoners-three women and a young man with a past-whose lives, and those of their friends and lovers, connect in tragedy, stunning surprise and exquisite turns, only to change irreversibly in the shadow of a grand historical event.

Rating: - 4.5 out of 5: Tender and extraordinarily intimate
Moving backwards in time, the story covers the lives of four Londoners during WWII (2 women and 1 man, all gay except for one straight woman). The lives connect and intersect in surprising and revealing ways. Tender and extraordinarily intimate with the backdrop of brutal war.

To start with, before people start throwing things at me, let me say that I realize that the set of main characters here includes some males and a heterosexual woman. However the stories of these characters are, at least for me, quite banal, and the book would have been better off without them. The main story here, for me at least, concerns the three lesbians Helen, Julia, and Kay.

Rating: - Good but not Great
This novel is interesting in concept -- going backwards through time to delve into how a set of characters ended up where they are at. And the backdrop of war time Britain is marvelously dark and wrought with peril. At the same time, I was disappointed by the lack of true depth to the characters. Unlike other novels by this author, it is more difficult in this novel to dive into the characters' heads. Perhaps Viv is the most fleshed out of the lot, and even then, it takes a bit of work. Duncan, Helen, ... Read More
Rating: - amazing period depiction; pretty good otherwise
I really respect the very careful historical recreation Waters has achieved with this book. She really brought home for me the tension of being a civilian in London during the Second World War in a way I haven't felt with any other books I've read. I also admire her unusual chronology, which she made work for her marvelously.
I have to agree with some of the other reviewers that the book was, to a degree, a little meandering. There was more than one passage that went on a little too long ... Read More

I've read 'Tipping the Velvet' and 'Fingersmith' haven't quite gotten up the strength to read 'Affinity', due to the fact that even though I like Waters a lot as a writer, for some reason I have a problem getting excited about starting her books - and so it went that way for The Night Watch, I've been starting and stopping on the first twenty or so pages for the better part of a year - Finally, I made it over the hump and in the end I found a book that I enjoyed a lot more than 'Fingersmith' or 'Tipping ...
