Charles McCarry has been called the best American espionage writer who ever lived. Now, with the re-release of his classic Paul Christopher series, comes The Last Supper, a tour-de-force that traces the evolution of the OSS and the CIA from the aftermath of World War I through World War II, Vietnam, and the Cold War.
To Paul Christopher, the world of espionage had become a region of the mad, in which men and women lived without conviction and were compelled by a craving for conspiracy. But now, he has to find the “mole” in the Outfit and demand justice from enemies, past and present. As he follows the twisting path of this secret American intelligence group, he discovers a trail of betrayal and violence that leads backward to the horrors of the Nazi era and plunges forward beyond the Vietnam War’s labyrinth of lies.

Rating: out of 5 stars - slow and predictable
One reviewer here says that this book ends up "putting Charles McCarry in the same literary league with John LeCarre, Alan Furst, Eric Ambler and Ken Follet." While I do enjoy a couple of those writers, or at least a few of those books, one thing that authors like LeCarre especially have in common with 'The Last Supper' is that the story is very slow. It uncoils like a leisurely afternoon. The prose truly reminded me of LeCarre and his intellectual spy thrillers. If you like LeCarre's books, I am ... Read More

Rating: out of 5 stars - An all encompassing nest of spies
Charles Mc Carry's "The Last Supper" is a multi layered and often overwhelming espionage thriller surrounding the life of one time OSS and CIA operative Paul Christopher.

The novel commences with Christopher having left the CIA embarking on a trip to Vietnam to thwart some old enemies from endangering his lie and those close to him. His departure coincides with the killing of his long time lover Molly Benson who eluded protection from an old colleague of Christopher's while rushing to ... Read More

Rating: out of 5 stars - The Last Supper
I enjoyed this book very much. It tied up some loose ends in previous "Christoper Holland" books I had read by Charles McCarry. I am looking forward to reading the rest of his books, especially those with Christopher Holland in them.

Rating: out of 5 stars - Rave reviewers must have read just the first chapter
I think this is the lowest rating I've ever given a book. Usually reviews in the newpapers are a good indication of what's between the covers. The reviewers and the quotes on the dust jacket promise that McCarry is a new LeCarre. But once you get past the first chapter (which does grab you), what you get is an author whose characters are ludicrously stereotypical and laughably one-dimensional.

It would be more laughable if it wasn't so transparent. Bad guys are really, really bad. ... Read More

Rating: out of 5 stars - Full Course Meal
Charles McCarry continues his saga of CIA operative, Paul Christopher, with this fine novel that further develops characters and plotlines begun in his earlier work, Tears of Autumn. Christopher returns to Viet Nam in an attempt to intercede and prevent the forces that may bring harm to his beloved Molly in reaction to the discoveries Christopher made regarding the Kennedy assassination in Tears of Autumn. Tragedy follows and Christopher ends up in a Chinese prison.

The novel expands the ... Read More
