Editorial Review:
Lupus affects an estimated 1.5 million people in the U.S.—90 percent of whom are women—but due to the diversity of its symptoms and severity, it remains one of the most difficult conditions to identify and diagnose. In the tradition of the other titles in the First Year™ series, The First Year™—Lupus uses a unique approach—guiding readers through their first seven days following diagnosis, then the next three weeks of their first month, and finally the next eleven months of their first year—to provide answers and advice that will help everyone newly diagnosed with lupus come to terms with their condition and the lifestyle changes that accompany it. Starting with the day of diagnosis, Hanger provides vital information about the nature of lupus, choosing the right doctors, treatment options, coping mechanisms, holistic alternatives, and much more. The First Year™—Lupus will be a supportive and educational resource for everyone who wants to take an active role in the management of their condition. Although Lupus is not preventable or curable, this illustrated book explains how symptoms can be treated through prescription medications and self-management strategies.

Rating: - Seriously, 7 people gave this 5 stars?
This book is fine if you have absolutely no knowledge whatsoever about lupus and have exactly zero background in any sort of science. It's extremely basic, and has a very annoying "self-help" feel to it that just had me rolling my eyes every other page. There are much better books out there, written by doctors and psychologists and so on - this is just written by a (rather whiney) woman with lupus. It's a quick read, so worth it if you don't have a lot of time and just want bare minimum information, ... Read More
Rating: - Good counsel & perspective
I purchased this book following an initial diagnosis of Lupus. The author demonstrates sympathetic voice while offering reasoned advice and experience. She shares her as well as others experiences in this easily readable book.
This book explains why physicians find it difficult to diagnose this condition and their subsequent behaviour towards their patient. You should read this book each time you have a medical appointment to avoid frustration and remain hopeful.
Rating: - Great book
Really help to organize a new life style to live as a normal and healthy person.
Rating: - What a great book!
After receiving a diagnosis this year of Lupus SLE, I had no idea where to start or begin. My doctor threw me on some medication and basically told me to "buck up", which left a lot of my questions unanswered.
Fortunately, this book sets out answering those difficult questions that may come after a diagnosis. The book is set up into "days", "weeks", and "months" after a diagnosis, all of which are stages that most of us have (or will) go through- everything from shock, to depression, to just ... Read More
Rating: - Best book for lupus
I have lupus and it's obvious that the author does too. By far the absolute best book I have read about lupus, both for sufferers and their families. The author explains all the need to know information in a no-nonsense, easy to understand manner. An excellent book to have friends and family read. This is a good book for any lupus patient, not just the newly diagnosed.
