Despite the questions of her roommates and the objections of her fiancé, Jamie Evans persists in enrolling in a college course that seems an odd choice for a young woman of her background. What no one can know is that the course, The Psychology of the Lesbian Experience, will propel Jamie onto a journey of self-awareness and realization.
For the required fieldwork, Jamie is paired with the darkly beautiful Ryan O'Flaherty—a boldly "out" and sexually adventurous lesbian. This somewhat unlikely pair slowly, and sometimes painfully become aware that what they feel for each other is more than just friendship.
The temptation to live life on her own terms is great, but so are the costs, as Jamie struggles to break out of her establishment-fashioned, pre-ordained mold. If she can summon the courage, however, she might find out that love, and life, have so much more to offer than she had ever dreamed.

Rating: out of 5 stars - Excellent - how to get the series
Susan Meagher has created a classic with this book. Unfortunately this version of the book is now out of print - sadly the publisher was unable to stay in busiess. BUT the full series is now being published by Brisk Press. The series starts with Awakenings which has similar content to this consolidated book but continues with Beginnings, Coaleascence, Disclosures, Entwined and Fidelity. Susan is publishing a new "book" in the series approximately every 6 months and plans to continure to the letter ... Read More

Rating: out of 5 stars - Beautiful love story!
Being new to lesbian romance, I was hesitant to start this series. I had read this author's other works and loved it all so finally gave in and decided to give the series a whirl. Good decision! I fell in love right along with Ms. Meagher's characters, Jamie & Ryan. In fact, I have gone on to read the current 16 novels in this series, not once but twice.

The writer gives us lots of detail, you actually see these characters come alive and quite easily picture the world they live in. ... Read More

Rating: out of 5 stars - Now in print in an expanded series!
While this version of the book is out of print it has been expanded in a series taking the story well beyond this first novel;

Awakenings
Beginnings
Coalescence
Disclosures
Entwined
Fidelity
Getaway

You really get to know these people and love them. From the very first page the reader is captivated and wants to know more about the characters. We meet Ryan O'Flaherty and Jamie Evans, juniors at the University of California at Berkeley. Oh My ... Read More

Rating: out of 5 stars - One of the great classic ubers
One of the best coming out novels, lesbian love stories, picaresque sociological treatises, or works of erotica that you will ever read. A monumental achievement (the author intends to write a novel length book about her characters for every letter of the alphabet) and a distaff look at life in S.F. every bit as significant as "Tales of the City." Both of the ubers are young here and still in school, but it gives them an awful lot of memorable growth work to do for, with and towards each other. ... Read More
