From the 1880s until the 1960s the weekly covers of The Journal of the American Medical Association displayed only a table of contents. On April 20, 1964, the JAMA cover featured a reproduction of Jan van Eyck's St. Jerome in His Study. Since then the art that graces the covers of JAMA and the accompanying essays have provided physicians with a refreshing pause in their busy days and also a topic of conversation. In the 1970s, M. Therese Southgate, MD, became the guardian of this tradition. The Art of JAMA features:

I have been raving about this book since I first discovered it during the late summer of this year (1999). It contains such insightful comments, reactions, comparisons and details! M. Therese Southgate brings an intelligent, inquisitive, and thoroughly fresh approach to viewing art-its subject matter as well as its artists. Whether an aspiring artist, an established artist, or one interested in art as a collector/enthusiast at any level, this book is a joy to own.
