Though a bit dated (2002/2003), it offers a good amount of information and detail on the 401(k) plan for the beginner. The authors build a good case and show by examples why investing for retirement is important and how starting early can make a lot of difference. It was a quick read even with a lot of financial terms explained and I believe I am wiser having read it.
