Editorial Review: Gilgamesh is considered one of the masterpieces of world literature, but until now there has not been a version that is a superlative literary text in its own right. Acclaimed by critics and scholars, Stephen Mitchell's version allows us to enter an ancient masterpiece as if for the first time, to see how startlingly beautiful, intelligent, and alive it is.

Rating: - Gilgamesh: A New English Translation
This book represents a very nice attempt to translate the extant Akkadian text to English poetry. It is well done, and makes good reading for those who are interested in reading the Gilgamesh epic. There is a good explanation of terms and names in the second part of the book, following the poem. The account of the 'flood' will be of interest to Biblical scholars.
I recommend this book.
Rating: - Another Epic Hero
As Odysseus had his hubris, Achilles' his slave-girl issues, Aeneas his abandonment of various women, and Beowulf his greed in the end, Gilgamesh is a non-traditional hero whose sin is the all-too human desire for immortality, both through fame and life everlasting. There doesn't seem to be much redeeming value to what is known as the oldest story in the world. The narrative is achingly repetitive and spare. It is very easy to read, and there are only a select few images that make this worth reading. For example, the symbol of the snake taking Gilgamesh's only hope for youth away was very clever and brought to mind allusions from the Bible. In the same vein, there were many other references to the Bible, which, interestingly, had not yet appeared. The ending was ... Read More
Rating: - wonderful rlelevant translation
I loved everything about this translation. I had tried to read Gilgamesh earlier and this was so much more
accessible. This is such an important and sophisticated myth, compared with that a lot of current work is just comic books. It is great to have this version to help us understand the roots of our culture. Also, just a fascinating story that has truly stood the test of time.

Well written book describing the epic and its origins and then a very readable epic poem based on compilations from leading translators...very smooth and fun to read.
