Editorial Review: Stephen King's second book, 'Salem's Lot (1975)--about the slow takeover of an insular hamlet called Jerusalem's Lot by a vampire patterned after Bram Stoker's Dracula--has two elements that he also uses to good effect in later novels: a small American town, usually in Maine, where people are disconnected from each other, quietly nursing their potential for evil; and a mixed bag of rational, goodhearted people, including a writer, who band together to fight that evil. Simply taken as a contemporary vampire novel, 'Salem's Lot is great fun to read, and has been very influential in the horror genre. But it's also a sly piece of social commentary. As King said in 1983, "In 'Salem's Lot, the thing that really scared me was not vampires, but the town in the daytime, the town that was empty, knowing that there were things in closets, that there were people tucked under beds, under the concrete pilings of all those trailers. And all the time I was writing that, the Watergate hearings were pouring out of the TV.... Howard Baker kept asking, 'What I want to know is, what did you know and when did you know it?' That line haunts me, it stays in my mind.... During that time I was thinking about secrets, things that have been hidden and were being dragged out into the light." Sounds quite a bit like the idea behind his 1998 novel of a Maine hamlet haunted by unsightly secrets, Bag of Bones. --Fiona Webster
Stephen King's second novel,'Salem's Lot, is the story of a mundane townunder siege from the forces of darkness. Considered one of the most terrifying vampire novels ever written, it cunningly probes the shadows of the human heart -- and the insular evils of small-town America.

Rating: - Stands the test of time
In King's 1999 prologue to the Signet edition of the book he remarks that the book is "dated." I agree with that. When you read it, you can tell that is was written in the early 1970s. However, I found that is what made this book so special. It is a timeless story of a small New England town under siege with the townspeople living their daily lives afraid of the boogey man, be it the Vietnam War, new residents, etc. This book is scary, well paced, and a beautiful adaptation of Dracula in the 20th ... Rating: - Best King Yet!!
Salem's Lot started out slow, and took about half the book to get the plot going, but that is common among King books (which I had only read 6).
After that, I was so into it that I could barely sit still with excitement.
This book truly scared me!!
Rating: - Tied with Pet Sematary as King's best novel.
I remember being seven or eight years old and snooping around in my older brother's room. I found a copy of Salem's Lot on the top closet shelf.
Needless to say, a snoopy little brat like me couldn't pass up the chance to read something that would have horrified my parents.
This book was my introduction to King, and what an introduction it was.
A page turner from start to finish, shocking and terrifying, a true horror masterpiece.
The plot, the characters, the imagery is disturbing ... Read More
Rating: - One of King's best ! A great scary read with plenty of twists !!
This is the oldest work I have read so far by King (The Stand comes next). Most of his book I have read were written after 1986. I had heard plenty of times that his early work was much better than the new era, so I looked at the reviews and Salem's Lot looked pretty good.
I made a great pick! This is obviously one of King's best (certainly in the TOP 3 with The Stand). Salem's Lot main idea is fairly simple...be ready for vampires, a LOT of vampires. Don't like reading about vampires ?!? Me neither, ... Read More
Rating: - Lots of fun
Just like many other of his books Stephen King delivers again, this time with a classic vampire novel. Great characters and story development with a rapid pacing, make for lots of fun and a very enjoyable read.
