A poignant and heartfelt debut novel about love, loss, friendship, and sexual identity.

In the summer before his senior year of high school, Daniel Peterson packs his belongings and youthful memories as he takes in the comforts of his childhood home one last time. His apprehension about the family move and his anxiety about losing friends and attending a new school overwhelm him. He has no idea just how dramatically his world will change.

Once settled in Whalers Cove, Daniel finds fast friendships and romantic possibilities. He begins his senior year with optimism and the support of his new pals. During the school year, Daniel's best friends must overcome unexpected obstacles. Seeking the solitude of a nearby park, he grapples with his own hidden desires and his need to be himself, until a shocking announcement sets Daniel on a path of self-discovery where he risks losing everything.
*****

"As I turned the pages of Dancing in the Arms of Orion I was fascinated, thrilled, terrified, and finally walking on air. It's a beautiful story that I'll want to read again and again."

Mark A. Roeder, author of the series, Gay Youth Chronicles

"Stephen R. Moore's debut novel, Dancing in the Arms of Orion, is a solid work of fiction in the tradition of --Mark Roeder's Gay Youth Chronicles. Told from the narrative point of view of high schooler Daniel Peterson as he comes out to himself, his family, and his friends, the author has managed nicely to create a multidimensional character with internal conflicts, personality traits, and a voice that rings true throughout the book. Secondary characters also ring true, which is saying a great deal about Moore's potential as a writer. A good first effort."
--Ronald L. Donaghe, author of the series, The Continuing Journals of Will Barnett

"Wonderful! Sensitive! Powerful! Delightful! The author brings us to an environment where we'd all like to be with characters we'd all love to spend time with! It is extremely well-written by a very talented new writer," --Anthony J. Zatti, author of the Camping in the Backyard books.

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Rating: out of 5 stars - Great characters, intriguing situations, some unrealistic conclusions
"Dancing in the Arms of Orion" is a gay coming-of-age novel that presents believable and sometimes surprisingly unexpected challenges (always a welcome turn in this genre) to its array of main characters--six high school seniors, boy and girl, gay and straight. The characters are fleshed out and one can, for the most part, relate to them. And their storylines--as individuals and as a group--weave together nicely. I give a thumbs-up...to the first three-quarters or so of the novel. In the end, the ... Read More

Rating: out of 5 stars - They'll Feel Like Old Friends
I just finished reading Dancing In The Arms of Orion and I must say I was greatly impressed. I am still now, hours later thinking about the characters and their lives, and their friendships. The characters were fleshed out well, and Mr. Moore has really set the bar high for his next work.

The only flaw I found was that the editing was choppy, but this isn't Stephen Moore's fault. I don't know what it is about the editors at Iuniverse but they always miss something.

Rating: out of 5 stars - Flawed, but worth the effort
I'd give this book about three and a half to four stars. The general plot line was gripping; so many (too many?) challenging events happened in too short a time. Death in a car wreck, teenage pregnancy, rape, multiple kids "coming out" to too little negative response, a near suicide, a road trip that raised some eyebrows, sports events, and other events kept the action moving throughout. The lead kid, Daniel, is a parent's dream; do many 17 year old guys really love their little sisters and show so ... Read More

Rating: out of 5 stars - Guilty Pleasure
"Dancing in the Arms of Orion" by Stephen R Moore is a solid first novel with likeable characters and a fun storyline. However, it is most definitely a first novel. The plot is, at best improbable. I don't know when this was supposed to take place, but Moore is obviously out of touch with the high schoolers of today. These kids stay in penthouses and have email and IM, but they're like "Golly jeepers mister! A cell phone! Gee wiz!" Riiiight.

Also, the characters are a tad flat and their relationships ... Read More

Rating: out of 5 stars - Wish my senior year was like that.
As a first novel, "Dancing in the Arms of Orion" sets a fairly high mark for Stephen Moore's next work. I enjoyed the story line and the cast of characters. I was not out during high school but remember back (25 years ago) to endless nights of wanting to find that special "someone" with whom I would share a life. Daniel Peterson, the book's main character, is lucky - almost TOO lucky - to find his.

The plot twists are not unexpected but are handled imaginatively, and add to the book's readability. ... Read More
