Editorial Review: It's Sunday after dark. Your baby is sick, hurt, or acting strangely, and the doctor won't be in until tomorrow. How can you find out what to do when your healthcare professionals are unreachable? You may only need to go as far as your bookshelf. The revised edition of Caring for Your Baby and Young Child: Birth to Age 5 (the American Academy of Pediatrics' reference book for infancy through preschool), provides a wealth of authoritative child-care information in an easy-to-use format. The first half of this hefty text serves as a comprehensive parenting manual, and includes a month-by-month guide to the first year, nutritional information, basic care instructions, and physical, emotional, and social developmental milestones for children up to 5 years old. While the American Academy of Pediatrics represents the mainstream child-rearing philosophies embraced by thousands of baby doctors, it does not reflect the entire gamut of child-rearing theory. (There's no discussion, for instance, of breast-feeding past the first year or co-sleeping.) The second half of the book includes a thorough, easy-to-navigate emergency first-aid section, plus detailed information about childhood illnesses, immunization schedules and side effects, and family structures, as well as a discussion of behavioral issues. Caring for Your Baby and Young Child is useful, sensible, and carefully researched, and makes a trustworthy addition to any parent's bookshelf. --Ericka Lutz

Rating: - Caring for your Baby
Bought this book to have while babysitting my grandchildren as to what should be normal growth and development. So far it has been informative as an reference book for me.
Rating: - Great Resource
I received this book before I had my first child 3 yrs ago. It is very comprehensive and informative especially from birth to 2 yrs. I still look at it everytime my child gets sick or if I want to see if his motor skills, emotional, physical development is on track. I like it so much that I just bought it for my friend when she had her first baby. The only thing I wonder is when a new edition is coming out since this book was published in 2004.
Rating: - Disorganized and Inconclusive
I received this book free from 'Publix Baby Club' and was disappointed by its layout and language. I love to read and wanted to be sure I knew all that I could about infant care before I delivered my first child so I was eager to take all I could from this guide. Unfortunately the book jumped around and didn't seem organized, and therefore I was turned off to it. The content isn't as straightforward or as clear as it could be. If this is your only "manual" for infant and childcare, then by all ... Read More
Rating: - Highly Informative, "A Bible", our hospital nurse said
Very good book was given by my son's pediatrician's office, which I recommended to my family, friends, and colleagues. I gave one copy to my brother and kept another copy for myself.
I did read every chapter as our first son grew (born 7 years ago). Each chapter cover the growing stages of babies: birth to one month, one to three months, etc, plus some specific chapters, including feeding, toys, growing mile stones, etc. The book says pretty much the same information as our sons' pediatrician ...
