Editorial Review: An extraordinary southern saga begun by Michael McDowell and finished after his death by Tabitha King. Known for his chilling Blackwater series, author Michael McDowell left behind the unfinished manuscript for Candles Burning upon his death in 1999. In the spirit of the ghost stories that Michael loved, Tabitha King has taken up where he left off, weaving a Southern gothic fabric of murder, guilt, innocence, corruption, and survival, in the voices of the living and the dead. Calliope "Calley" Dakin is just seven when her beloved father is tortured, murdered, and dismembered by two women with no discernible motivation. In the aftermath, Calley and her mother find themselves caught up in inexplicable events that exile them to Pensacola Beach, where-in a house that's a dead ringer for Calley's late great-grandmother's house-a woman awaits their presence. For Calley is no normal little girl.

Rating: - Long awaited
I fell in love years ago with Michael McDowell's Blackwater series, and was so sad to hear he had passed away, but what a lovely tribute that Tabitha stepped to finish it, you won't be disappointed, it is a haunting and wonderful read. Thanks.
Rating: - Unusual, unique read
This was a very unique and unusual read, and I liked it. The story is told in first person through the viewpoint of a 7-year-old Calley Carroll Dakin, who is a young lady at the end of the book. The homely child is virtually unloved by her whole family, except her doting father who unfortunately gets killed, chopped into pieces, and stuffed into a foot locker. After a falling out between Calley's mother Roberta Ann Carroll Dakin and "Mamadee", Calley and her mom move to Florida and into Miz Verlow's ... Read More
Rating: - Great start, mediocre finish
I had bought this book based on the premise of how it was written. The author who started it (McDowell) died before completion, whereupon King took over and finished it. I have never read anything from either of these authors, so I didn't have any preconceived notions going in. The start of the story was amazing, not just in plot but in how it was written, I found myself laughing out loud at several parts and overall in love with the language that was used in its writing. But as the story progressed it ... Read More
Rating: - negative zero star rating
I just had to write a review to say "Don't waste your money or waste your time reading this book....so dumb!!!". I dreadfully read it just to see how it ends....wow, TK stay away from mystery/suspense/horror...you just don't have it!!!! I'm sorry I spent my money on the hardcover version.
Rating: - could have been sooooo much better
I just got done reading this book and I was really disappointed. It had so much potential. The writing was excellent but the storyline just went nowhere. In the beginning, the plot really got you involved and was intense and a page turner. Then you read all this fluff in the middle that doesn't seem to really relate. Well, okay it ends up relating in some vague way to the ending where they give you all the who's done it stuff. But, it was having to pick through the middle to get to the end where, "bam" ...
