When a simple case turns into a treacherous and politically charged investigation, Spenser faces his most difficult challenge yet-keeping his cool while his beloved Susan Silverman is in danger.

Spenser knows something's amiss the moment Dennis Doherty walks into his office. The guy's aggressive yet wary, in the way men frightened for their marriages always are. So when Doherty asks Spenser to investigate his wife Jordan's abnormal behavior, Spenser agrees. A job's a job, after all.

Not surprisingly, Spenser catches Jordan with another man, tells Dennis what he's found out, and considers the case closed. But a couple of days later, all hell breaks loose, and three people are dead. This isn't just a marital affair gone bad. Spenser is in the middle of hornet's nest of trouble, and he's got to get out of it without getting stung. With Hawk watching his back, and gun-for- hire Vinnie Morris providing extra cover, Spenser delves into a complicated and far-reaching operation: Jordan's former lover, Perry Alderson, is the leader of a group that helps sponsor terrorists. But Perry doesn't like Spenser poking around his business, so he decides to get to Spenser through Susan. The Boston P.I. will use all his connections both above and below the law to uncover the truth behind Perry's antigovernment organization. But what Alderson doesn't realize is that Spenser will stop at absolutely nothing to keep Susan out of harm's way; nothing will keep him from the woman he loves.

Rating: out of 5 stars - WOW!
Nobody, but nobody, writes like Robert Parker. I've been a fan of Spenser since "Godwulf" came out, and he is second to none in packing volumes of wit and information into a few words. Even if the plots weren't great (and let's be honest here, sometimes they're not), he'd be worth reading just for his use of language. "Now and Then" was an absorbing read on both counts, and in my opinion is one of his best. He just gets better.

Rating: out of 5 stars - Not to up to my standards
I was not impressed with this novel. Seemed difficult to follow. No real flow to the story. I am from the Cleveland area and was not impressed with his descriptions of the town. His love life was never was never fully explained. Kind of aluded to her past but never really explained in detail, maybe he meant it to be that way. Wouldn't recommend this book.

Rating: out of 5 stars - Then better then now
Having read and re-read alll Spenser novels, I consider myself a moderate fan: I like to read these if reading anything else is to much work: these books make one smile and, if one is lucky, they make one think a little.

This installment wasn't bad, but the ending was somewhat hasty, and the plot seemed somewhat empty. A realy bad guy, sure, but 12 pages before the end I still had this feeling nothing much happened yet. And the chuckles in this book seemed somewhat less frequent then ... Read More

Rating: out of 5 stars - Terrific read...
I've been reading Parker for a long time, and it's great to see him back at the top of his form again. Even when the book is not great, Spenser is always fun. And this book shows our favorite PI at his best. Wisecracking with cops and bad guys, flirting with beautiful women, and, of course, being the ultimate tough guy when he has to go into action. I liked the story too, which kept me guessing and had a lot of depth to it. I read this book in a day, which is really the way to read Parker. Great fun... ... Read More

Rating: out of 5 stars - A notch above some of the more recent series' efforts...
This is typical Spenser for Mr. Parker, this time featuring Susan more than usual, and lots of references to the most troubled time in their romantic relationship, a bad patch of 20 years ago. This held my interest all the way. Hawk and Vinnie are hanging about, and they are always fun. The bad guy is a lefty radical who may or may not have fabricated his '60's counter-culture credentials. One enjoys his comeuppance, even though one might back in the day, have admired him. I get my Parker from the library, ... Read More
