Editorial Review: Angela Dawson, M.D., appears to have it all: at the age of thirty-seven, she owns a fabulous New York City apartment, a stunning seaside house on Nantucket, and enjoys the perks of her prosperous lifestyle. But her climb to the top was rough, marked by a troubled childhood, a failed marriage, and the devastating blow of bankruptcy as a primary-care internist. Painfully aware of the role of economics in modern life, particularly in the health-care field, Angela returned to school to earn an MBA. Armed with a shiny new degree and blessed with determination, intelligence, and impeccable timing, Angela founded a start-up company, Angels Healthcare, then took it public. With her controlling interest in three busy specialty hospitals in New York City and plans for others in Miami and Los Angeles, Angela's future looked very bright.
Then a surge of drug-resistant staph infections in all three hospitals devastates Angela's carefully constructed world. Not only do the infections result in patient deaths, but the fatalities also cause stock prices to tumble, leaving market analysts wondering if Angela will be able to hold her empire together.
New York City medical examiners Laurie Montgomery and Jack Stapleton are naturally intrigued by the uptick in staph-related post-procedure deaths. Aside from their own professional curiosity, there's a personal stake as well: Laurie and Jack are newly married, and Jack is facing surgery to repair a torn ligament at Angels Orthopedic Hospital. Despite Jack's protests, Laurie can't help investigating-opening a Pandora's box of corporate intrigue that threatens not just her livelihood, but her life with Jack as well.

Rating: - Unreadable
Medical mystery, high finance, organized crime - sounded interesting, but the writing is so bad that I could not even finish reading it. Here is the description of someone drunk:
"Amy was now evincing slight intermittent jerky motions just to keep herself sitting upright."
'Evincing'? 'Intermittent jerky motions'? That are 'slight' to booth!
And the real pain are the dialogs:
"I am beginning to wonder...", "Yet my real concern...", "We have mandated..." ... Read More
Rating: - Back to Freshman Comp
This is probably one of the worst books I have ever read, from the standpoint of the writing. Robin Cook could not pass Freshman Comp. The grammar, the syntax, the punctuation--what a mess! And what are the editors thinking--have they no pride at all? Maybe the author simply doesn't know how to write standard English--but surely they do.
The execrable writing leads to some humor, obviously unintended--consider a reference to an anesthesiologist "passing gas for me tomorrow," with no indication ... Read More
Rating: - Disappointing!
Being a Robin Cook fan, I was let down by this book with a mixture of confusing mess of events. Very unlike his book!!
Rating: - Root of all evil vs. Laurie, Jack, and usual cast
I may be predjudiced because Robin Cook has been my favorite diversion for many years, but I was surprised by all the bad reviews this book got. I particularly like the Laurie and Jack books and thought this was at least as good as any before. As, a chemical engineer (doctor) / wannabe MD (REAL doctor), I also read Cook to learn something more about medical technology. I wonder if the bad reviews come from people bored by such things. Anyway, what I liked most about this one is that all the characters, good ... Read More
Rating: - Quick, breezy reading for the the beach
Critical is the latest in Robin Cook's series highlighting the fascinating lives of Dr. Jack Stapleton and Dr. Laurie Montgomery, Medical Examiners for the OCME in New York. This newest of Robin Cook's medical thrillers offers more of the same, simple detective novels made unique by medical and scientific terminology thrown in to impress on the reader that (1) Robin Cook was at one time an M.D. and (2) These books are better researched than a typical John Grisham novel.
In Critical, there is an ... Read More
