Editorial Review: Within our increasingly diverse society, the needs of patients from other cultures, especially the minority ethnic groups, are being recognized at local and international levels. Recent data, however, indicate that the realities in service delivery do not mirror this. Cross-cultural Psychiatry provides a practical guide for mental health professionals to 1) recognize culture specific differences in presentation within clinical settings; 2) understand differing idioms of stress and distress and accord them appropriate prominence; and 3) thereby improve the delivery of services, their acceptance by individuals, and the overall quality of care. Focusing on clinical skills, and drawing on case studies in actual practice, this invaluable guide shows how best to develop traditional clinical practice for today's cross-cultural client.

I think this book is written for those who do not have extensive reading in the social sciences as they are applied to medicine and psychiatry. An MD without social science background might appreciate it, but a medical anthropologist should know most of this material already. Maybe that is the point. I am glad to own it though... it has some good references to other research that makes it helpful as well.
