Editorial Review: The haunting story of three copsone good, one bad, one brokenand the murder that reunites them in a showdown decades in the making. Gus Ramone is good police, a former Internal Affairs investigator now working homicide for the citys Violent Crime branch. His new case involves the death of a local teenager named Asa, whose body has been found in a community garden. The murder unearths intense memories of a case Ramone worked as a patrol cop 20 years earlier, when he and his partner, Dan Doc Holiday, assisted a legendary detective named T.C. Cook. The series of murders, all involving local teenage victims, was never solved. In the years since, Holiday has left the force under a cloud of morals charges. Cook has retired, but he has never stopped agonizing about the Night Gardener killings. The new case draws the three men together, re-igniting the love, regret, and anger that once burned between them, and old ghosts walk once more as they try to lay to rest the monster who has stalked their dreams.

Rating: - Night Gardener Should've Kept His Day Job...
Unfortunately, my high expectations for George Pelecanos' work - after reading his rave reviews - were sadly unconsummated after reading The Night Gardener.
Initially, the book seemed to have it all: Well drawn characters, gritty dialogue, authentic idiom, and just enough offensive people to make it all the more believable. Sadly though, the story's protagonist Gus Ramone almost fell into the latter category. Neither fish nor fowl in character, it was hard to accept him as a true crusader ... Read More
Rating: - Pelecanos at his best
The most mature G. Pelecanos work up to now. Dark, lively and up to date.
Rating: - Not the Best from Pelecanos
First, let me say that I'm a huge fan of Pelecanos. I think some of his earlier books are brilliant, and even his worst books are better than almost anything else coming out these days.
That being said, though, I was hugely disappointed with The Night Gardener. I get the feeling that Pelecanos wanted to tell a deep, thoughtful, detail-rich story about three interesting cops but just didn't have a plot to go with it so he hashed together something about a serial killer just to give the book ... Rating: - Good Police
After the tight Drama City this Pelecanos novel is more expansive -- a little too much so. There are a few too many criminals to keep track of and we definitely spend too much time in the squadroom. The meat of the tale is his usual dynamic of a righteous tough guy contrasted with the cool loser needing redemption. Good stuff, and there are some tasty period flashbacks to the 80s. (Given Pelicanos' mastery of D.C. past these may tease more than please.)
Rating: - Somebody Forgot to Write a Story
By the time I finished reading the novel, I could not help but say "Wait...that's it? What the...??"
The problem I see here is that this novel is more of a social commentary rather than a crime/mystery thriller. The author tackled racial discrimination, drugs, police corruption, et cetera that the crime where the story is supposed to revolve around is...almost a footnote.
There are three storylines, 2 of them intertwined at the end...the 3rd...eh well...it could have been a different ... Read More
